Why do Clocks Run Clockwise?

Post by db5 »

Just ran across a book with that title that my son gave for Father's Day several years ago. Ponder this. If clocks ran counter-clockwise they would be running clockwise wouldn't they?

When my son was little he had a wrist watch of the caricature Goofy that ran backwards. He was confused for quite a while since his teacher told him it was the direction his watch hands moved. At least until she saw the way his watch worked then she told him the way the wall clock hands moved.

Of course! It's all in a name. Kinda Orwellian!

I always understood that clocks move the direction they do because of the direction the shadow of a sun dial moved. Clocks were invented in the Northern Hemisphere and therefor the clock was made to run like a sun dial to save confusion .... :D

OKAY. I am confused but I am not going to pursue this. I can still tell time and that is all that matters here.

Yes they do. If you could see all those little mil microns running around in that circuit they are all running clockwise.

Yeah! Right! Not!

I buy Rjent's explanation.

Since whirlpools rotate reversed in the southern hemisphere, do clocks also?

Oh! and if the sun dials were rotated to 'point' south, the shadow would move 'counter clockwise'. :D
