There goes tonights plan

Post by reible »

to sleep with the windows open. It has been a while since it was cool enough and the humidity low enough to even think about it. Nice and cool and low humidly was so inviting.

Well about 10 minutes ago we had to close up the windows, SKUNK stink! So like I said there goes tonight's open windows plan.

Oh well there will be time for this again in a month or so.........

Yep! The Skunk family has been holed up because of the Hot/humid weather. When it cooled down they came out to get something to eat.

Whoops! Other scary animals also came out.

I feel you pain, last night, opened up the house, bedrooms windows open, mine and moms, mom sleeps till about 1130am, I am up around 8ish normally, some times a bit later, depending on when I go to bed, late last night, 430am, mom issues, dang neighbor start burning his garbage about 8, stinking acidic smoke drifting in my bedroom windows. 4 hours of sleep. Mom slept till 230, and I got her up, had the mirror under her nose from noon on.
There is worse smelling things then Skunk unless it is real close.

Skunks dont stink unless they spray or run over by a car and the bag gets ruptured. I bet a Coyote got a bit too close or the car thing. Grouse and Wood Cock hunting in the UP with a friend, 1 excellent German Short Hair, one 2 year old, we were in woods with deep ferns on the floor, my turn on point, first shot, lead dog goes on point, the younger dog did not respect it and rushed in, I went below the ferns, yelled skunk, he hit the collar buzzer, to late, long ride back to his cabin, heavy air, tomato juice and Windex with Ammonia bath for the dog!!!

Ed, i feel you pain, skunks abound here too!

Erlover, one of our dogs got nailed last month. The best remedy nowadays is a mixture of (fresh) hydrogen peroxide, baking soda and Dish soap (dawn). Deodorizes so well you could take em on a date! The tomoto juice bath is downright nasty. Save tomato juice for Bloody Marys!

I beg to differ. While it's not nearly as overpowering, skunks, like ferrets, also have musk glands in their armpits, and they produce a constant odor. It's not as bad as their spray, but it is still pretty potent. When you get a bunch of skunks hanging out together, even without being threatened by predators, they start to smell like a stack of burning tires. I had the joy of experiencing this when in high school, and the AC broke in the middle of summer (Southern New Mexico). Folks didn't have enough money to get it fixed for a while, so we slept with the windows open in order to not stifle. That was the same summer a family of skunks moved in under my bedroom window.

It was a sad, sad summer.

True. When I was in high school my biology teacher kept his pet skunk "Harold" in the classroom. He was descent-ed meaning he could not spray, but he did have a slight but not too offensive skunk odor. He spent the winters in the vented hazmat chambers. Friendly chap!
Alas, they can no longer be kept as pets (at least in my state) due to the fact that there is no tested rabies vaccination for skunks as there is for dogs or cats.

Smell is gone this morning/afternoon. Not sure where it happened, we do see them roaming about mostly at night.

We use to have two black and white cats and one of them and our black and white dog use to like to play chase. Well black and white skunks don't play that game..........well not by the dog/cat establish rules.

Vet said to use dawn dishwasher liquid. It still took a couple of cleanings but the worst part was we didn't know she had been sprayed and let her in the back door..... Of course it didn't take long for her to have spread the sent about. Door curtain was especially bad.

Of course I got the pleasure of the clean up. Next day the guys at work knew what had happened and did so for a few days after. I'm sure others knew as well but I could really tell anymore.

Back when we use to put up firewood in the basement someone for got to close the window one night. A baby skunk fell in and one of my brothers found it. It was injured but still alive so we put it in the porch where in died a short while afterwards. Cute little ball of fur. Bad thing was that the window didn't get closed and in the morning them Mom had gotten into the basement then followed the path up the stairs into the porch.

When my brothers got ready to head off to school there was the skunk. One of them went out a window and propped the door open. By the time I was ready to head off it had left. No spraying involved.
