Good and not so good day in the Shop

Making a bench per ER plans, to day was drilling the carriage bolt holes in the legs and aprons. Using a 3/8ths doweling Brad point bit with 2 spurs on it. Doing the long 2x4s on the ER Drill Press, no support available for the over hang, holding in place with my left hand, working just fine. Well finished up one end DP still running to to the other end, will it teetered/todered a bit, left index finger, back side, just in front of the first knuckle got nicked, darn spurs did a job.
First wood working injury in my life.
Just have to a stain/dye match now
Otherwise all went well, making dust and chips today.

Glad it was not worse. Mine came on a red cedar pergola project, and when I bled on it, one of my buddies there said "Well at least it was Red Cedar already" It seemed to throb more when they laughed at me, but as I stood there holding up the beam I was drilling, they stepped up and took over for me.

Drill presses can be really "Mean Suckers". a few years ago I was drilling some waste from a figure I was carving. Things were going nicely chips were flying and waste was rapidly hitting the floor, then it happened in an instant. Like a dummy I had on a Kevlar glove it was attracted to the 5/8" Brad Point in an instant. Luckily it was a glove I had salvaged by sewing on a finger from another glove. I was about to receive some severe injury but I gave my arm a quick yank and the replacement glove finger came loose, but I left part of my finger attached to the Brad Point.

Point is never, never, never operate a drill press with a glove on.

A drill press does not have that red area to remind us to 'not go there'.

If one forgets, the virtual red zone may become a real red zone!




Therein lies the down side of 'red zones'. When brain is engaged, they are not necessary. They do not provide any 'real' protection. Only a reminder to wake up the thought process.

Doesn't always 'work'.


As for gloves, same as any loose clothing(do NOT wear when near moving machinery.). Think about a lathe and a neck tie(or long hair)!

Don mine is not as bad as yours, the spurs cut a flap of skin 270* 3/8" diam.

Believe or not I still don't have any feeling in the last joint of that finger and that was about 20 years ago.
