Forum Restructure

I'll look at adding subforums for a few topics.

Now if people would just use them.

Many (maybe most) of the members do use the forums and sub-forums correctly. But all of us tend to get side tracked by off-topic discussions within the forum discussion. It is those side trips that I believe cause the forum to be degraded.

It is fine if someone wants to take a side trip but start a thread to do so.

It is my position that topics like the 10/10E/10ER should be grouped in a forum of their own.

I personally would like to see forums or sub-forums for jointer, planer, power station, crafters station, etc.

Maybe the crafters station and some others belong in a group of the not so popular Shopsmith equipments (Mark II, etc).

No matter what is done to reorganize the forum, if the intent is not clearly stated and enforced the re-organization will be meaningless.

Community is a prime example. There is an endless list of discussions (mostly in Community) that simply do no have a place on a "wood working forum"; discussions that have no imaginable connection to "wood working" or wood working equipment.

I use all of my machines (10ER's, MV, M7) on each project and will reference which machine (usually) I used on each process. Do you want me to stop posting projects? Stop referencing machines? Start a thread in the 10ER section on that part of the project? Or reference like I have been. I am confused ....

We have 2 Wood Working Forums already, should Community be the 3rd Dusty? Better yet, make you the "Admin"

I would like to see and think some sub areas would be useful, exp for E/Ers, some of the More modern SS stuff out of production, ect.
By the first 2 post here, I did get it was not about restructuring, both we jabs at me via the back door. Maybe you need to be more tolerant in Community. Heck I just read reible/Eds post surgery bath room routines on Community. Not you Ed, the other ones, are you so less tolerant with nothing to do? I did not post it last night, I was just waiting for someone else, and they did, need a sub forum for grumpy/bitter old men. With all do respects.
Ya thats it, a sub forum for pre surgery, surgery, post surgery and rehap reports. All here that posted that somewhere on SS Forum, raise your hand, please, b4 you throw a stone.

The way it going I might vote for just a forum and no forums at all. Part of the time that is how it going anyway. It's kind of like my favorite game called no rules checkers.

Certainly not the friendly place it once was. I've not invited people here for a while now, just to embarrassed at some of the nonsense. I often wonder when a guest comes in and reads some of this stuff.....

I personally come from a line of store tellers so I like some of those posts and indulge in a few myself. I'm sure not everyone likes that.

I do however really like projects, jigs, fixtures and I never have enough of those. I've cut back on writing them as it is a lot of work and effort and it is not clear this is the way the forum wants to go. Lack of others doing so leads me to this conclusion. That's fine as it is a lot less work for me but it also means I'm under utilized as a member.

A lot of the stuff that comes up I had to face way before things like forums came about. School and books and friends helped you learn. I like to learn and wish that this place was more of a learning experience. I can go a pretty long time before I learn something new here, but I'm sure a lot of the newer shopsmith owners and woodworks do find it worth while, just wish I did more so.

Anyway I've got a stack of project to get back to and this subject is going anywhere I need to go.

I like all that you contribute here. I am glad you are doing better, and I did not hearing the up date.

Technically, I think anything is fair game in "community" so long as it doesn't violate forum rules, including by inviting flame wars/fights among the members.

That said, there have been an increasing number of posts that appear to be little more than private messages between 2 or 3 folks who are carrying on what is essentially a private conversation on the community forum. It isn't prohibited by forum rules, but it clogs up the forum and makes it hard to find things that might be of more general interest and it makes the forum less enjoyable for some of us.

I would encourage members to think twice before posting in community and ask themselves whether it is a subject directed at the community at large or if it is really aimed at 2 or 3 friends -- in which case I would encourage folks to use the PM feature.

I have little expectation that anything will change, but one never knows!

No. I think you are reading something into my post that was not intended. I don't want anyone to "stop posting" anything that can be considered shop related. The projects that you post are certainly appropriate and well thought of by probably all of the members of the forum. They will most likely correct me if I am wrong.

Now when you get ready to service or repair your M7, that is another story. What I am suggesting is that there be a forum section dedicated to equipments like the 10ER and the M7 and others.

Furthermore, what I want is not important unless Shopsmith concurs. What is also important is what you want. If you disagree, speak up. Silence may be taken as concurrence.

Actually, I would like to see the Community section limited to "Shop Related Discussions". This would only loosely translate to "wood working".
