Well after spraying it for most of the day and trying to wiggle it back and forth it still remains on the head. Tomorrow we head out to Harbor Freight for a pulley puller. I have needed one in the past but always made my own tools. This time I dont have any scrap pieces around and 12.99 just makes it to easy to just buy.
Bill I'm just around the corner from you in Tarpon Springs its just north of Clearwater. You might be getting some more business if I feel I'm starting to get over my head.

Well to report back some good news the pulley puller and I won the battle. I would have never been able to get it off by hand. The first pop almost made me soil my pants along with the following five pops.
While cleaning up the spindle I noticed a little slop. I threw a dial indicator on it and measured it at .014. The black quill housing has no movement but the spindle assembly (what the saw blade was attached to) is moving along with the spindle knob (silver knurled knob that looks like it might be threaded but I am not certain). I was wondering if there is a place I can look up limits and sizes of parts? I don't want to call customer support seeing I didn't purchase the unit from them. Thanks again everyone for your help. Thanks guys, I did call SS on another subject. After getting the quill out there is no way that this can be good. Once out of the head I shook it and it sounded like a rattle can. I see on the SS website they have a Summer Sale going on for the two bearing quill for 89.38 http://www.shopsmith.com/ownersite/cata ... gquill.htm and on SS Academy they have the quill for 119.43 which is the sale price. http://www.shopsmith.com/ownersite/item ... tem=518210
So my question is what is the difference between the 2 and when does the summer sale end.
Its been awhile since I have had this much fun tearing something apart. I usually tear into jet engines and this has been so much more enjoyable. Although I have to say I dont care for all the tension pins:mad: I have most of the paint off the outer headstock and the legs are bare metal. I have one set of the caster assembly going through the tumbler right now. Might get the other set in there on Monday. Under all this rust and corrosion is going to be a nice little saw. I would have to say I should be done in a month or so. Thanks for the help.

I don't know when the "Summer Sale" ends, but you will be fine ordering your Quill either way you have listed. So, order the lower-cost way if they still have it.
Seems like I went through this a few months ago, and the only difference is that one of the ordering methods (the "upgrade method" probably) may end up with you having 2 of the Zytel-plastic things, so you have to discard one of these duplicated parts either from the Quill or from the drive sleeve assembly. Customer Service can advise you quite readily on this question. They are super and they actively give you the best option even if you don't know about it before-hand.
