Why the 2 step height on the SS Castor Assembly?
As the title implies, why 2 heights on the assembly when raising it? Is it a mechanically thing or has a purpose?

Greenie, Grayling, SS stand alone BS and BS SPT, jointer and belt sander, 3 Ers with Speed Changers. I think those 3 cover my ER needs, and space for them.

Here's the way I see it.
You are limited as to the distance the pedal will move when stepped on.
Also the amount of force attained by that stepping.
A force-distance design tradeoff.
Since that results in only a slight raising(s/b 1/4 ") a second 'step' is included to get it up 1/2" off the ground so as to clear small objects.
A third step causes it to return to the ground.
Been that way since the '40's'.

So it has to be a rotational thing, how far the lever moves, in ratio to the cams elliptical curve, and how much rotational clearance for the levers, in relationship to how it is mounted on the legs.

Sorta!
Those are all interdependent design parameters.
Stepped cam, not 'elliptical'.
Nite nite Michael!

Re: Why the 2 step height on the SS Castor Assembly?
I never questioned why. I just got used to the 3 step system and I like it because it works every time.

Bottom line - That's the way Hans designed it. Why is for speculation.

Re: Why the 2 step height on the SS Castor Assembly?
I am not an engineer, as Hans was, but it seems to get the full clearance lift without the two step cam process, could you envision the contortion it might take with your foot to make it lift in one pass, and the other step to put it back down?
I know it has always been that way, and it works. Thank goodness they kept it that way through the years which makes obtaining parts and updates possible. What a difference the Caster upgrade makes!

Easy for me! like to keep things simple. One lift on the castors will allow me to roll the machine across my concrete floor. Two lifts will allow me to move the machine onto my rubber floor cushion. Three clicks sets the machine wherever it is put.
Octogenarian's have an earned right to be a curmudgeon.

I have a tendency to think that is why.everettdavis wrote:I am not an engineer, as Hans was, but it seems to get the full clearance lift without the two step cam process, could you envision the contortion it might take with your foot to make it lift in one pass, and the other step to put it back down?
