Chuck, it is almost the same as using the depth gauge,
to measure the thickness of something.

(Until recently, I didn't know either!)

In the example the distance from a point of the square to the flat(an identical flat/point pointing down is shown) is determined.

Maybe a better visual line with the lines as shown in the video, but have to line up on both of them to have a perfect 45* angle. Does not seem real precise to me when I watched it.

Notice that the end of the caliper is tight against the flat in the second(right) picture. That provides a more accurate reference to measure the distance to the point which moves against the slide.

As ER said, getting that correct angle is difficult with the very narrow depth gauge extension.

Think of the two methods as into a hole vs across a flat.


Here I am explaining something I was totally ignorant of a few hours ago. But I now understand its function and usefulness. Not a catch all, but an additional method available.
