Set up to reduce the thickness of the top and bottom shelf where the plywood thickness was so different. Used the dado blade and adjusted to get the thickness the same as the other shelf material. Just cut the bottom 3 edges where it needs to fit in the uprights.

Here you can see the different in thickness and where I set up to match the thickness of the other shelf material.

Looks too much like rain to set up to do the assembly today so I'll work on other things. At least when the weather clears I have all the parts ready to go.

I think what Charlese is alluding to (I hope ) is to make projects from solid wood. Panels, door, tops, etc from solid wood using age old techniques. At least that is what I hope he is saying!

I do indeed prefer the aesthetics of solid wood. But Chuck is a forestry guy from way back when (OK, way way way back when ), and I have a hunch that there's more to his remark than mere aesthetics.

It sucks, even cabinet grade veneer, lets say for a set of kitchen cabinets, it would be okay for side panels till you go to stain it and it does not match the solid wood rails, stiles, and solid wood doors.
IMHO only good for shop, garage and basement utility projects and that is a high grade plywood/veneer.

OK - You are both correct on my thinking. Plywood is a product made for the convenience of covering large areas in a quick way. I have used plywood for probably most of the same projects as anyone else. However, I feel much better about any project I've made that used solid wood in panels and such rather than ply. I love the cabinets that have ship lapped 1/4" boards for cabinet backs rather than ply.

Yes, I am an old forester from way, way back, but I also have and had friends that harvested timber, sold timber and worked in plywood mills. One of my closest friends started and succeeded in convincing US Ply to use cottonwood in the core of fir plywood.

In my mind, it's not the decreased thickness that bothers me, That's workable with proper sized grooves and dadoes. The poor quality of the good surface is what really turns me off.

Finally cooled off a bit so while it was still a chance of rain this afternoon I went for it anyway. It is all put together except the casters. Need some hardy screws with big heads to attach them. Hardware store run tomorrow will take care of that.

Already have 28 boxes to to fill it up. But I will work on the casters and the pull out drawer before I start getting it in place and filling it up.
