Plywood used to be very exact....

I.e. the goal was no longer the 'nominal' X, but something barely above the lower limit of X-y.

It all is the result of greedy irrational thinking.

I disagree, it is greed. If they make it thinner they can make more from the supply of wood.
In days of old 3/4 meant 3/4. 2x4 were 2 inches by 4.

I once tore down a farm house that was framed with old growth Black walnut. Each 2x4 was 2x4 as were the 12x12 beams. Never saw so much Walnut in one place. Even the plaster lathe was Walnut. Did enough remodeling in old homes often run into real (honest) dimensioned wood. Fun to try to make additions not look like additions.

2 weeks ago bought some 2x4s and 2x6s at the BBS for my ER bench, since I have to lap them into the 4x4 legs, I mic them up, 1 3/8" thick, not 1 1/2.
You would not care as long as the width is still there standard and since they are going center in construction, whats an 1/8th of an inch.

OK - You are both correct on my thinking. Plywood is a product made for the convenience of covering large areas in a quick way. I have used plywood for probably most of the same projects as anyone else. However, I feel much better about any project I've made that used solid wood in panels and such rather than ply. I love the cabinets that have ship lapped 1/4" boards for cabinet backs rather than ply.

Yes, I am an old forester from way, way back, but I also have and had friends that harvested timber, sold timber and worked in plywood mills. One of my closest friends started and succeeded in convincing US Ply to use cottonwood in the core of fir plywood.

In my mind, it's not the decreased thickness that bothers me, That's workable with proper sized grooves and dadoes. The poor quality of the good surface is what really turns me off.

I am so glad to hear you say that Charlese! I was beginning to think I was either being too anal about this thing, or missing something basically important about building projects. i just liked the look of solid wood after i was done over the last 2 years. Yes it takes more work (which translates into just more sawdust ).And, if I am doing the math correctly, I think you can create a panel of solid wood (using the different techniques) cheaper than good plywood. Yes you need to deal with movement, but hey, that is woodworking .... Maybe i am wrong ...

Finally cooled off a bit so while it was still a chance of rain this afternoon I went for it anyway. It is all put together except the casters. Need some hardy screws with big heads to attach them. Hardware store run tomorrow will take care of that.

Already have 28 boxes to to fill it up. But I will work on the casters and the pull out drawer before I start getting it in place and filling it up.

Morning was a bust with Dr. appointments and more blood work, things were pretty positive anyway so I don't mind those visits.

Menard's is having an 11% sale again so I picked up the drawer hardware there.

Now it has wheels and the drawer so it is basically done.

Now comes the part where I have to make room for it where it will live. Lots of stuff to move around to get it there and then loaded. Well I stay busy this way.

The unit is 84" tall without the casters, 87-1/2 with casters.

I can reach all the cabinets without the aid of anything.

The very top area is not an official storage area, the last (top) cabinet opening is a single high opening for the smaller parts container where all the rest are designed for stacking 2 smaller parts containers, or one of the larger parts containers.

It is resting peacefully in it new location in the shop. I took this picture before moving it into position so you could see all the storage boxes filling it up.

Spent most of the day working on this, well doing some cleaning, moving things around, but all related to the project at hand. Now I have to get on to yet another project.
