History repeats - Election woes - Not taking sides

Not taking sides at all - the repeating parts of history are interesting (and funny) to me. Although the happenings have some present day repeats, history is not necessarily predictive.

History is sometimes fun, but always interesting, at least to me.

Back in 1884, James Blaine, who beat incumbent President Chester Arthur in the Republican primary. Blaine then ran against Grover Cleveland.

Cleveland, being rapped up in a scandal - having a known fling with a married woman and fathering a child, was in trouble. Also Cleveland, a lawyer, did not serve in the Civil War. He paid a substitute to serve in the military for him. (That was legal in those days)

So--- The favorite Republican was defeated in the primary, and the Democrat was viewed as a deplorable person.

Blaine was not favored by many of the Republican elite. Some even campaigned for the other party. These rebels were called Mugwumps. (that's a term I remember from high school)

Blain was expected to win, but at the last week, a Protestant Minister attacked Republicans who left the party (mugwumps) and supported the Democrats. The rule to never attack your opponents supporters was violated.

The result was Cleveland won the POTUS by a one half of 1% margin.

At the risk of going political:

What our country needs is "Hope and Change". I Hope for a Government By the People and For the People. Boy would that ever be a Change.

I also Hope for for a landslide turnout on election day. Now that would really be Change.

From your post it would seem you are leaning one way and not the other, however it could be construed that it could be either? I too hope for a landslide but the "Hope and Change" slogan rings an ominous bell that we heard in 08. I'm hoping history doesn't repeat itself and that can be interpreted either way. I got in trouble before for making a so called political post, wonder if this one will get deleted.

It is incredible that nations all over the world that have so called "Free Elections" get 70 to 90 percent turn out. In the U.S. seems 40-45 is about it. No wonder the federal government is loaded with crude!

I thought I defined what Hope and also what Change means to me. Enough said.

I just hope there is an election. Too many senarios of this or that happening and the election being suspended. Never thought there was a chance but as we get closer things are getting more and more ridiculous.

I am a youngen here compared to most, but I have never seen 2 dysfunctional candidates like this in my live time, at any level. Seen some but not both running against each other like this.
