New owner -- drill chuck runout

What condition are your bit shanks in? Do you bottom out the bits in the chuck?

This particular bit has never been used before; other bits I've tried are also in essentially unused condition.

I do bottom out the bits when I can, though with this particular bit the machined flats on the shank aren't long enough to bottom the bit out without the jaws reaching past the flats. But I am inserting it as far as possible, so the tips of the jaws are right at the end of the flats.

I do the same thing, BUT I pull it back out about a 1/16 of an inch, then tighten the jaws.
