Made To Shopsmith Quality Standards In Taiwan

My parts that I ordered from Mike last Thursday arrived. This is the printing on the side of the box:

The good news is that they do look as good a quality as the others I have.

I got some Shopsmith casters around 2009 with that exact same Taiwan verbiage on the box. They were also very well made.

At least, they are not made in Viet Nam or China. Taiwan is our friend and the island nation that China wants back. Taiwanese are the escapees from communist China. They do have quality products. However, I much prefer to have American workers make our stuff.

Last year when i contacted TeknaTools (in Australia) regarding outsourcing a power cord capable of using 110 or 220 plugs, I read in a press release that they had begun producing their DVR motors in China. Presumably it was regarding motors for their tools, however I presume it was for all of their DVR motors. The release was trying to paint in glowing terms of how well they (Teknatool) was overseeing the quality of the Quingdao Chinese plant.

Not certain if that's the answer you were looking for......

Made in China does not necessarily translate to "poor quality" just as Made in the USA does not necessarily translate to "high quality".

Similarly, there is little or no reliable correlation between quality and price. About the only thing you can bet on is that if it is high quality it will also be expensive.

What I would appreciate reading is the "Inspectors Handbook"; the one used by Shopsmith while performing product inspections. The one used during incoming inspection would be just as interesting (and revealing) as would the one used for outgoing inspection (the final assembly and packing inspection).

In a perfect world everything would be built in the USA by USA companies. However for a whole lot of reasons that I won't go into that is not the case. If there is a choice that would be my first choice. My second choice is made in out of country by USA companies. That way profits spendable income is in the USA. The worst scenario in my opinion is made outside the USA by an outside USA company but sold in the USA.

Being made In The USA by a outside USA company sounds good but all profit, all R&D money, all spendable income goes out of the USA.

What Shopsmith is doing has been forced on it but is the next to the best scenario of what could happen and far from the worst situation.
