My 10ER aka Jane Doe

As some of you might recall, a while back I was posting questions about my 10ER I had purchased. The main one being, when was she made and does anyone have an extra name plate!! I've searched eBay high and low with no luck. Except the one that was "ripped" off that I'd rather not mess with. Anyway, it's been a while since that thread but life happened and now it's time for an update. I've gotten everything torn apart except for the bearings off the drive sleeve. I have not disassembled the motor yet but that's next. I plan on using her mostly as a lathe, and of course it's missing the whole tool rest and arm assembly. I've seen them on eBay, but they seem to go a little to high. Here's some pics that were requested a while back to try and help date her. I don't have any pics of disassembly yet, but will take some soon. At the bottom of pic 3 is the plate that was in place of the Shopsmith name plate. The quill return spring is broken. The end that slips on to the rivet to hold it snapped off. Will have to find a new one. Also anyone have any info on wiring that I should know about re the powr-kraft motor? I've never worked on a motor and I know I'm going to have to do a full re wire due to the wires being shot and there not being a standard toggle switch.

Good basic platform to start with. The spring is easily repaired by creating a new "keyhole" slot with a couple of drill bits. The "cover" on the headstock is a shame and unless you have the original plate, it will be hard to tell exactly when it was made, but it looks like a unit that is made 1951 or later. The motor is not the usual suspect, but the motor was optional anyway. You have the coveted 10ER jointer headrest. Read the rebuild threads of myself, JBurger, MickyD, etc and you will be up and running soon. They truly are great machines!

I've already read both of mickyd's restore threads numerous time, as well as a few others. Mucho informativo. I will be posting more pictures/progress/ and questions on this thread. And trust me there are alot more questions to come. The first, if you look at the picture of the headrest, pic 1, right in front of the tie bar, there is a bolt with 2 nuts on top going into the headrest. Any suggestions as to why it's there? and can I just remove it? (looks kinda ugly)

That is the somewhat rare Jointer mount bracket. If my memory is right that bolt/stop nut adjusts the angle of the jointer to the units drive spindle. I'm sure others will add in. The Yahoo 10ER groups has lots of pictures, instructions and catalog drawings.

The 4E jointer pivoted on the bar with a hinge plate. You rotated it down (upside down) when not in use. When in use you pivoted up in place and that bolt/nut was a stop that the jointer rested on. Yours dose not appear to be OEM but functional if you have the jointer. That headrest is rare but of no use over the standard head rest unless you have a 4E jointer. The pivot plate/hinge is even more rare than the head rest or the jointer. I have 2 jointers and 2 head rests but only one pivot hinge.

There is no drive spindle on the 10ER for the jointer. There was an extra pulley on the motor and a pulley on the jointer. The bolt and stop nut adjusted the belt tension.

If didn't come with the jointer. In fact it didn't come with much at all. Just the standard table saw stuff. Table, aux table, saw blade on headstock, and that's about it. No Jacobs chuck or drive center or dead/live center or tool rest or sanding disk or any of that good stuff. I already have my greenie that came with quite a bit so that's why I'm planning on using the ER as a lathe only, minimal amount of parts needed to do that. I'm on the yahoo 10ER users group, but have yet to post anything. Will probably do it soon and see if anyone has a name plate or possibly busted up headstock that I could salvage one off of.

Those nuts and bolt on the tie bar is a home made thingie, not SS.
Tool rest and arm!!I think I can fix you up or Tom Wasser can.
Tom did I send you one by mistake, or was it the fence? If it was the tool rest and arm by mistake, pay it forward to him please, and let me know if that was it and you do.
Other wise, just checked ER stash here at moms, I have an arm with a stop collar, I know I have an extra tool rest or 2 at home in Atown, but dont know how soon I will be up there. Mom has a new Rest Bit period for me, but I am not sure I want to put her in, too many germs, I think she got her Pneumonia there the last time. BUT, nephew will be coming down in a few weeks for a visit and could bring the tool rest down. I think you are a few weeks away from christening anyway!!!
If using for Lathe, get this from Skip, I get nothing out of it other then your Kudos, I got it for my nephew, the turner for an early Xmas present sine he was shipping me some things.
Da!! get these from him, it makes a HUGE difference, I have them on 3 of my ERs and soon as I get up to Atown nephew will have them, part of his Xmas present. On all of my HS shafts I had to take off about a .001+ for a nice slide on fit. I put the drill chuck on, inserted a shaft, chucked up my cordless drill on it, to spin the HS pulley shaft and did the HS pulley shaft with some 220 and 320 wet and dry AO till I got a nice slide on with a tich of machine oil.

Thanks for the offer ERlover! Even if "Tom" doesn't have them, I would like to work something out with you for them. I've been on Skip's site probably too many times. Drooling over the motors he has for sale. I've been pondering on asking the wife for it as a birthday/xmas present but will wait a little longer. The upgrade handles are a definite buy as well as the pulleys. Will also purchase belt and bearings from him if he stock's them. It is going to be longer than a few weeks I think. I'm almost finished with the greenie, just waiting for $$ to order some stuff from Bill Mayo. I'm sorry to hear about your mother, I've read about it all through different posts and if it were me, I couldn't ever put my mother anywhere, except where SHE'S happy. Hope all is well!
