Wood from Menards

I have no idea what I'm going to use it for but the pattern was so different I had to have it. Less then a buck so how could I go wrong. It looks like pine except for the pattern is not something I associate with pine. And yes both sides look like this.

Maybe Charles can tell us about it, or someone else??

Was that a sheet piece or a bunch of boards? With all those knots, it has to be a pine or spruce item IMHO.

I have no idea what causes that exactly, but I wouldn't care. That is so unusual and attractive that you just have to find a project where you can use it.
I'm not an idea person, but if I had that sitting around my shop, eventually I would come up with some kind of idea.

Insect infestation / Norway pine?

The brand says graded by Western Wood Products. Definitely a softwood. Maybe from the tops of trees. Looks horrible to me, but I'm not artistic. 98 cents for all these boards is a fair price.

The piece is a 1 x 10 about 30" long, no doubt a cut off. I paid $.69 for it.

It looks more interesting in real life then the phone picture. Here are two updated views that show more detail(same photo but expanded and lighten a bit). The light and dark areas are sunlight coming through the willow tree leaves, the wood is not colored that way.

Put it in the stack of wood to think about next spring as my outside woodworking is about done for this year.

I have seen that before, it is not that uncommon. I have no idea what causes it. But since I have no artistic vision I cut it off refusing to pay for wood i won't use.

Let us know what you make from it, maybe I will rue the day I cut it off.

I think it's a terrific piece of wood. For something.

Maybe it needs to be framed. Ed, see if the pics below, that basically highlight wood "defects", spur any ideas.

Got a little closer to identifying your wood, Ed.

First had to find the mill that has 202 as an identifying number.
202 SIERRA PACIFIC INDUSTRIES, Lincoln, CA

next have to find what the "K" in the little circle stands for. My guess it is a species designation. I'll leave that chore up to you.
