It is a solid cylinder made up of rounds disks nailed together with finishing nails. The nails are round, not old square cut nails. The wood is a softwood, not hardwood. It is about 10" long and 8" in diameter. There is a thin gasket type material between the first two wooden disks on one end. The gasket is not leather. Could be asphalt shingle material. There are evenly-spaced score marks around the perimeter on the gasket end, but they don't extend all the way to the other end. The round wooden "handle" on the gasket end is tapered. The "handle" on the other end is broken and not tapered. It is not soaked with oil or grease or anything. It may have been treated with oil at some point, but it doesn't feel oily, and it doesn't dirty your hands to hold it.
The gasket and score marks indicate that it is a plug of some sort. My first thought was to keep the weather out of a cannon tube, but the score marks are wrong - they would be the inverse if that were the case.
Any ideas to satisfy my curiosity?
