New planer with PowerPro

Just picked up a used planer off craigslist for around 200 bucks. In perfect shape and looks to be not more than a few years old. Couple questions, it did not have a manual with it, where can I download this. Also, what RPM's should I run my Power Pro at?

Although I'm not sure about the RPM, I think the speed chart on the PowerPro will tell you. Try the speed chart button (labeled "chart") will give you the correct speed(s).

Congratulations on a good find. There is a Service Tip (#34) available that covers a lot of the information in the owner's manual:

I could never find a place to download the owner's manual, but it is available for purchase from Shopsmith. Also, if you don't have the knife setting gauge, you may want to pick up one of those too.

SuperPop - there are special instructions and a new Speed Chart label for the planer when using it with the PowerPro. You can contact Customer Serice and they will send you a set of the literature and labels (845672 and 845673) out to at no charge.

The PowerPro chart shows 4000 for general planing and 5000 for finish planing.

Thanks folks, talked to SS today and they are sending the sticker and manual out no charge. Any idea on how to find out the date of manufacture. Customer Service indicated that they do not track SN age on the Planers. Just curious how old my new planer is.

I picked up a ss pro planer an estate sale second day for $168.00. Stand alone with casters. Had to sharpen blades and was easy with ss planer sharpener. Putting them back was a chore. I have a set of knives and a cutter head with bearings from another shop smith. I wonder what is the minimum width the knives can be before they are to thin to replace into the drum?

Not sure when Shopsmith may have changed their S/N numbering system, but the one I picked up about 18 months ago had a S/N of 091593, which Shopsmith Customer Service told me at the time was also the date of manufacture - Sept 15, 1993.

Other clues may lie in the type of infeed roller (rubber or grooved metal) and type of height adjustment (wheel or crank handle). From the Supplemental Owner's Manual insert I received dated 10/93, I think the grooved infeed roller and crank handle were standard starting sometime in 1993.
