In my experience it is more about the blade than the wood. I find that once the drift angle is set it doesn't vary from harder to softer woods. So yes, you could set up with poplar and cut something harder without changing drift. Every blade is different and life is a lot easier if you let I cut where it wants to go. :-)

I totally agree Paul. That has been my experience also. The wood does not matter it is the blade. I have used a Timberwolf 5/8" blade on my SS band saw for resawing with no need to change the fence for drift between wood species.

I now have a Powermatic 14" band saw with a 6" riser block. It has a 3/4" Timberwolf blade for resawing. The fence came with a plastic single point to do resawing. I built a full up aux fence for resawing and used the powermatic plastic single point thingy as the pivot point for the fence.

The first picture shows the black plastic thing in the middle of the fence. The second picture shows the angle the fence is adjusted to for the Timberwolf 3/4" blade. It works for all wood I have cut.

I still use the SS band saw occasionally for small resawing.
