Emerson Motor trips surge after about 10 seconds

Post by vijaysub »

Hi everyone,

I picked up a shop smith Mark V locally and when I first got the unit, the emerson motor would not spin. I opened it up and blew out all the sawdust. Cleaned it with electric motor cleaner, replaced the bearings and capacitors, greased the ends and put it back together. Now the motors runs fine but after about 5-7 seconds it trips the surge/breaker. I opened it back up to make sure nothing looked like it was shorting. Any thoughts or leads on what I should check?

Thanks
Vijay

CRC Lectra-Motive. Sprayed it after I blew out a ton of sawdust. Let it sit and dry.

Not sure about the start switch. How can I test it?

Not easy since it is inside and it needs to be checked while running.

The actuating mechanism may be observed through a vent hole.

You should be able to hear the fly weights etc. flip both at start up and at power down.

When you reassembled it, did you make sure the mechanism was free to move?
