Mark V: Can the Bases Be Swapped During Assembly?

Finally figured out the part number for the double-sided table posts (Tie Bar Tubes) used in the 520 and Mark 7. The cost is $155 and they can be ordered.

Here's the procedure I plan to follow (after I gather the funds to order the new posts):

Please note that for anyone reading this who is not familiar with the original assembly of the ShopSmith, I highly recommend you read the manual, including all full-detailed instructions, and watch the many videos that are available online prior to attempting.

1. Slide off Headstock and carriage. (I also have an accessory shelf which I will be uninstalling and moving to the opposite side, but this won't apply to all users)

2. (Without headstock on the machine) Flip the frame and swap the two legs (this is to allow the casters to be accessible from the new working side).

3. Flip frame right-side-up and install both the Headstock and carriage in the opposite direction (carriage will remain to the right of the headstock).

4. Remove table and knock out the Tie Bar Tube pins from the inside out.

5. Install the new double sided (threads on both sides) Tie Bar Tubes.

Then I should be good to go. I give-up over-table routing, shaping and the drill press, but gain under-table capabilities for all but the drill press.

Please let me know if you notice anything awry with my procedure.

I somehow missed this post. See my post just above this reply about the tubes. AFAIK they are not available. rebile posted the tube P/N from the manual as 522797. I have not looked at my manual but I am sure he is correct. That P/N does not come up on a search on the SS web site as he said. What P/N did you find and where?

Space and funds are the issue. Storage is another issue. With all of the other attachments, combined with rare use of a router, it makes sense to adapt what I presently have. Functionally, I use the shaper on instruments, but not that often.

As for the part, I spoke with SS directly this afternoon. That is how I was able to determine that the part was available and the cost.

So far as the tapered pins, that is easily addressed with some stock I have around in the shop.

Post 191382 in another thread also had the side by side table parts list I did with the drawings.

Items in Blue are aligned because they are the same part numbers between Mark 7, 520 and 510 / 505 Tables That may help you see what is and isn't the same.

That is the same P/N that reible listed. As I said a search on the web site did not find it. But, the phone call was productive.

An additional question: will a 500 table fit onto the 510 carriage?

So, I am considering a work around until I can come-up with the funds for the newer version Tie Bar Tubes for the table. I am considering pulling out the threaded spline inside the carriage which currently prevents me from flipping the table. Then, I will employ some tube clamps on either side of the carriage to hold the table position from side to side to center the table over the headstock while in an upright position. I will most likely try to use something like Trynox tube clamps which feature a wing nut of sorts. If I run into an issue where the tubes are sagging, I can adjust by angling the table itself. While not optimal, it is an inexpensive solution which will only take a minute to employ. Other than the steps I have listed in a previous post (to switch which way the SS tilts), it seems like the quickest and easiest method to get up and running.

Now that I would say is a fine example of "thinking outside the box". All you have to remember is that raising and lowering the table is a strictly manual process with those splines removed. Well, one other thing. You will be relying entirely on those tube clamps to prevent downward creep of the table.

Great input and I'll keep that in mind. Just remember that the height adjustment would be manual anyway since the headstock will be in the upright position, 90 degrees to the table. The weight of the table alone will likely keep the tie bar posts in a bind against the tube clamps. We will see if it works out.

And for me, I refuse to admit the box exists in the first place! (Laughing)
