Dogwood

Post by boco »

Back in July 2015 a long-dead dogwood tree finally toppled over in our yard. There is an old thread in the Community section where I asked for project ideas.

I cut the trunk up into sections and let them sit until this past November, when I re-sawed them into boards of various lengths and widths. (Sadly I don't have the SS bandsaw; used my Rikon instead.) Here are before and after photos, with a 48" drywall T-square for scale:

I also set aside a couple of lengths for turning projects.

And here are the first two projects: a tealight holder and a cheese board.

In addition to using my 510 in table saw and drill press mode, I used my Shopsmith OPR to shape the foot of the tealight holder.

The grain is more interesting than I had expected. The tealight holder has a lacquer finish and the cheese board is finished with walnut oil.

More items to follow as time and inspiration present themselves.

Very nice ideas and nice work!!

I have found as you probably already have, any projects made from homegrown sticks or trees give a special feeling to the maker.

One project I have made from an apple branch was a small box to hold any type of jewelry or junk.

Looks great - I love to see projects that start from raw material to finished project!

If you wouldn't mind sharing a photo (or a link if you've already posted it), I would be interested to see your apple branch box. Thx!

I've read that dogwood is very tough and impact-resistant, but I had no idea that the wood was so pretty. In the old days, it was used to make shuttles for textile looms.

I have an very old/declining dogwood tree at the edge of the woods in front of my house. When its time is up, I will be sure to harvest the usable wood. Thanks for posting!
