Exactly. I prepared a square of maple, cut it in half, and glued it back together with a walnut strip in the middle. After it dried I cut it in half again (at 90 degrees) and glued the second walnut strip between those pieces. Then cut the circle out on the band saw.

BTW, my biggest problem with the other (finished) one was that the pressure exerted by expanding the chuck jaws in the mortise caused the second glue joint to start to fail. I re-glued it with wood glue, let it sit for 24 hours, then added some CA glue along the joints before remounting it. I also stopped the lathe regularly while hollowing it to check for signs of separation, but it held up well.

That's a nice looking bowl my friend. As others have stated it is addicting.
