The best add-on for Mark V

Post by ryanbp01 »

In your opinion what is the best add-on the has been offered by Shopsmith for ease of use in the shop? To get the ball rolling on this thread, I would like to mention the remote control for the Dust collector. It is one less cord to trip over in the workshop, enables the woodworker to turn the dust collecor on before turning on the Mark V, and allows the dust collector to be turned off on the way out of the workshop.

For ease of use, I vote for the Lift-Assist.

An accurate, high quality fence system.

If you have a 520, you already have it.

Has to be the casters/wheels. Can't imagine lugging that thing around the shop without them.

That's an easy one. I currently use a wireless remote control (which I attached with a chain near the on/off switch of the Mark V) and simply press the button to turn dust collector on and off. It's about the size of a garage door opener. Works great!

Wow! These are all great choices! I have all but the 520 fence and rail system, and I think that the three that I have are pretty much equal in answer for the question, and lets knot forget the add-on dust collection systems that they have developed!

It's hard to say which add-on would be at the top of my list as I have all the items already mentioned except for the lift assist. The casters came with my machine when I purchased it so didn't really consider them. I do a lot of turning and would have to give the universal tool rest a vote, as it is so much easier using it when turning and also gives extra weight for the shopsmith. I really enjoy its benefits when turning bowls. I would also have to mention the adjustable collars that I keep on the tail stock and band saw for quick setups.

I have a Recommended Speed Chart (actually 2) ready to look at as I work. These are very helpful even though some of them I've virtually memorized now.

The Digital Micrometer has saved me a ton of time.

The Sandpaper Eraser is a super cleaner-upper.

The Miter Stop Rods have given me flawless matching pieces many times.
