SS 10er suddenly will not start
Hello folks,
This afternoon I stopped my SS 10er to adjust the tool rest. When I went to turn it on, there was nothing. No whining, no noise. The motor turns freely, and sounded great when I turned it off.
Do I start by replacing the cord and switch. The outlet does have power.
All advice appreciated!
Randy

I have an electrical tester that you can check if there is power in an insulated wire. They are about $12.00 at the BBS. With that you could check if you power going from the switch to the motor.

Thanks ERLover. I'll look for one of those and start there!
Re: SS 10er suddenly will not start
I agree, I would certainly check the switch first given how you described the problem.

Unplug the ER pull the switch out jumper the switch and plug it in, if it runs it was the switch, if not, time to dig deeper.
It is easier to do this in the Drill Press position with the Head Stock at a comfortable height for you to work at.

Replace the switch!!! Cheap and dirty and when it is fixed you will still have a brand new switch. Switches generally fail abruptly. Also check the condition of the wires inside the casting that lead to the switch terminals

Same here. It's most likely the switch or wiring at the switch. If the wiring is original, It may have frayed and corroded at the switch. Several 10ERs I have acquired over the years had really bad wires at the switch.

Everything from the plug to the motor wires is suspect.
P.S. Add internal motor connections.

Re: SS 10er suddenly will not start
Thanks everyone-now reading about which switch to get. The switch does look original (or at least very old) as does the plug, etc. so I'll go ahead and replace what I can while I have things apart.
I really appreciate the advice!

Re: SS 10er suddenly will not start
I suggest getting a #14 extension cord and replace the plug and wire. Cut the socket end of the extension cord off and wire that to the switch etc..
