Router set-up

I thought I would post a couple of pictures of one of my set-ups of my router table.
a couple of years ago I posted my approach to modifying a spare 510 table to a router table. Through the years I set it up between the main table and the auxiliary table. It has worked quite well but there were a couple of drawbacks.

First in order to get it in between the tables, it positioned the main table over the head stock, making the working surface extremely high for me. Secondly, set-up is rather cumbersome. The set-up shown in the photos is much more user friendly to set-up and the working surface is anywhere you want it within reason. The controls on the router are much easier to get to. The only drawback is, it makes the complete unit about 24" longer and can be a problem if it's cold and I can't open the shop door. In any case I think there are a couple of people that used my design that maybe haven't thought of this option.

A tip for you, I have a similar Bosh router, mounted on a work table like you.
I used the switch on the router, but the fan in it when upside down can clog the switch as I was told by the repair tech after I needed the switch replaced.
Instead he suggested plug it into a power strip, leave the router switch in the on position and use the power strip switch for on and off. Since I did that no problems over 8 years.

Yes this is the same basic thing I do. I have router table with the 520 hardware rather then your home brew but the idea is the same. As you already know the router table can mount on either end, I find I like to keep the shopsmith in the garage and stick the router out on to the driveway. Here is a picture of a project from a while back where I have mine set up that way.

I also like to sometimes use the brackets that shopsmith sells to mount the router table behind the main table. That gives me an extended work area for the saw as well as the router table.

I sometimes even set up my joint-matic on one end and the router table on the other side. That is one of the things I love about a shopsmith, so many ways to do things.

Right now the unit has been put to bed for the night but the photos shown are not complete I should have been more though. Actually the router when in use the switch is "On", The router is plugged into a "Panic switch" which is located right behind the IPM-1 fence (not in the photos). Also some Sherlock will probably notice in the photos the router is turned 180 degrees. When in use the router motor locking device is in full view. Did you build a new table to mount it that way on the SS? The size looks different than mine. Also re dust collection - they used to sell and adapter that connects to the fence and works pretty well. I've included pics - should be easy to build (I don't think they're in business anymore).

The table is not an oak park one, it is from Jointech, they were a company that made a system for the shopsmith but have since gone out of business. I did have to by the shopsmith mounting hardware for it.

All of my Oak Park stuff is pre the dust collection updates. The last I knew they were still on the web but just selling off inventory. It would have been nice to see them continue in business but that didn't happen.

My table is not drilled for the box joint stuff either, I just play with it and clamp it in place. I did have the instructions for the drilling but they were lost somewhere or just misplaced in a box somewhere.

I could build the system I guess but it just another thing on a long list.
