SS 10er suddenly will not start

Hello everyone,
Thanks again for the discussion and posts! I hope I can somehow return the favor.

It was the switch. I have installed a new cord to the switch, a new switch, crimping, soldering and shrink wrapping all of the connections. I did everything I could think of to secure the connections and cord, using the zip tie approach.

I opened up the motor to replace the cord from the switch to the motor and was instantly lost, so I blew the motor out, wrapped the cord where it exits the motor just to make sure, and moved on. I figure at some point this spring/summer (I work in an unheated garage)I'll pull the motor and take it to a shop.

One note-my 16yo son who builds drones and robots suggested hot glue to secure the connections. I passed on that advice, but your posts gave my son and I some great discussion fodder, which, with a 16yo is priceless.

I have everything hooked up and the motor sounds great. Following my dad's advice I am taking a break, then will go reinspect everything before really using.

You can tell your son that his hot-glue idea has a lot of merit ... 3M makes glue sticks that are recommended specifically for securing electronic components. You can even use the stuff to pot small circuit boards. Here's an example.

Probably works very well but it doesn't look like it is a consumer product. 3M doesn't list it less than 11 pounds and is in the $500 range. Seems like nobody else even Amazon sells it in less than 11 pound quantities.

I doubt craft store hot glue is even close.

The hot glue melt sounds like a neat idea but isn't necessary. Just make good, clean, tight connections and you'll get many years of enjoyment from your machine.

$2 by the stick at Digikey. But it's a 5/8" diameter stick, for which you're not likely to have a glue gun at home.

I agree with oldiron that it's not really needed for Shopsmith wiring ... just wanted to encourage the OP's kid to keep thinking creatively!

I plan on using a Strain Relief Cord Connector like one of these on my next 10ER IF I choose to drill the hole in the headstock, as some have.

While not in the thick casting of a 10ER, I have used both and they work fine. I am partial to the Cord Connector.

As a matter of fact. Just this Sunday I replaced the switch in my ER. It's a quick easy fix.
