Purchasing a 1956 Greenie

I am going to look at a 1956 Greenie this weekend to purchase. I understand there will be some work involved somewhere in the process even though the owner states it works just fine. Looking for recommendations on what to look for besides powering the headstock up and running it through the speed range when I take a look at it Saturday 4 February. I have a model 520 made in 2000 already that I use on a regular basis that I love. Think it would be rewarding to refurbish an old greenie and use also.

Got the machine home and I great shape the previous owner was actually using it. Everything works and the speed dial turns like it should. I will not use it until I have torn the headstock down inspected, cleaned, lube, replaced whatever needs to be. I have two projects to finish in the shop before I begin hopefully the beginning of April. I have read numerous post on here and will continue to from others that refurbished a Greenie before. What is the one thing that I should know that I want think of? Everyone has that ah ha moment when you get in the middle of something. What were some of everyone's out there?

The 'aha' moment comes when you finally understand the beast in its entirety. When that happens(if it does) varies individually. Be aware that there may be some 'false' ones along the way.

As for 'be careful' moments do be careful removing the spring from the motor shaft floating sheave. Ditto putting it back on.

Finally do not force things until you understand why it will not move. Sometimes(often) crud buildup will make that necessary, but make sure that is the case before getting gorilla assistance.
