Today in the shop (weed pot)

So the day has come for me to make my first weed pot. Cross that off the bucket list.

This is a trunk if you will of a lilac bush. Cut it down yesterday and it is turned wet. Yes it will no doubt crack and all that but I think that is the idea.

I've got more of the branch so I might turn a few more in the up coming days.

24 hours later and the cracks have started. It's looking better all the time. I did put a bit of butcher block oil so the color changed a bit.

Sorting paper work today but hope to have time to turn another sometime later today.

Did another one today after NCIS. Haven't gotten a good view of his shopsmith in a while, don't watch every one so I may have missed something.

These are fun and I might try drying a few pieces in all the turning remains I've got piled up from the pair of these. Of course it is a lot more fun turning them green.....

I wonder if you wiped them down a few times a day with linseed oil or tung oil leaving one end un sealed for the moisture to escape if they would still split.

I had a friend who used lilac for a handle on a western red cedar jewelry box , turned out very nice , I was thinking that was how he kept it from splitting .

re NCIS, The last episode that I spotted the 10er was "Keep Going" 2017/1/24. It's like "Where's Waldo" for Shopsmith fans.
This last episode Gibbs was working on an engine and there seemed like a lot more tools and stuff hanging on the walls than I remembered.

Good work on the weed pots, they certainly are fast and fun.

One of the things I miss about the Midwest is the abundance of woody things. Our lilacs will never get big enough to use.

This pretty much means that no broken branch should go to waste. The fact that you can cut it into sections and then turn right away is great. No worry about splitting because you know it going to happen. No packing away in a bag for 6 months or a year just let it do its thing.

I'd never turned a piece of lot of woods so I had no idea what this one would look like, surprise! I like it! Who knows what other things will show up in the future.

This will be an interesting project to practice turning on. I have been pruning my apple, cherry, peach and pear trees so maybe I can find a few larger size branches to use. I have only tried turning a couple of times years ago but is something I want to learn to do.
