Where did you get your shopsmith?

Re: Where did you get your shopsmith?
The first one I bought was from SS, at the Fresno Ca. county fair.
I watched the demo 4 or 5 times that day and had to have one.
Later on during the next week, I called SS and cancelled my order.
Then 4 or 5 years later I saw SS was set up in the Santa Maria mall.
again I watched the demo 2 or 3 times. while my wife went shopping. I told her I would be at the demo when she finished shopping.
A coupe of hours latter, she returned and asked if I had ordered one yet.
I told her no because I cancelled the first one I wasn't sure if I really wanted one now or not.
She reminded me why I cancelled the first on. We were living in a Mobile Home and I did not have any place to keep it.
Now we were living in a house with an empty garage, and the house had a kitchen I told her I would remodel.
So I ordered my second one.
I really don't care about the resale price being low, as I do not have any planes of selling. Then again the low resale price can play in my favor, as I have see several in my area with several add on's that I don't have so who knows. maybe another SS is in my future.

Re: Where did you get your shopsmith?
I guess I sort of inherited mine. My father-in-law gave me his 1958 Greenie, which he bought used in 1964, several years before he passed.
Re: Where did you get your shopsmith?
My 1st was handed down to me from my wife's aunt. It was her husbands, a 10e.

I bought a Crafter's Station during a demonstration. In that transaction, I bought a jointer and a DC3300 at those discounts.
After a short time the Crafters Station would not reverse without hand spinning the hub. Tried to get it fixed by Shopsmith. They sent a new station, but in a week or two the same thing happened. I called Shopsmith and told them my sad story and asked if they would take back my Crafters Station at the purchase price and credit that amount to purchase of a Mark V. Shopsmith kindly said yes. So did that and bought a Mark V 510. I asked what the advantage of a 520 was. (the 520 was new that month) The answer I got was "a bigger fence".
When I croak, my family will likely sell my 510 with PowerPro with nearly all of the SPTs and attachments. I hope they get over $1,000! More like $4,000. There is over $10,000 of machinery (purchase price) in my shop, and all in excellent condition.

Same story here except that I bought my Crafters station from a fella who posted here on the forum that he needed help making his useful. I don't knoiw how he did it but he some how smoked the entire wire harness. This sort of wiring being "fun" for me I tool his problem off his hands. I got it from him in about a week and it came with a bandsaw.charlese wrote:I bought a Crafter's Station during a demonstration. I purchased a wiring harness from Shopsmith and a relay (actually I bought three because theory told me the relay was the root cause). I now have a functioning Crafters station and two spare relays.
Only word of caution. If you have a Crafters station do not attempt to reverse rotational direction without turning if "OFF". Once off, turn it back on in the new configuration and "Go Make Sawdust".

Re: Where did you get your shopsmith?
The stop before 'reversing' problem is common to the Mark VII or any reversible induction motor.
I do not see an electrical problem even if both switches were simultaneously on. However flipping the accessory power switch will cause the relay to reverse the start winding polarity. That is non destructive as long as the make/break sequence of the contacts behaves 'normally'.

I did mean to imply that it was a problem and I certainly do not believe that the wiring harness got smoked because of it.JPG wrote:The stop before 'reversing' problem is common to the Mark VII or any reversible induction motor.

I simply stated my opinion and advise: Only a word of caution. If you have a Crafters station do not attempt to reverse rotational direction without turning if "OFF". Once off, turn it back on in the new configuration and "Go Make Sawdust".

Re: Where did you get your shopsmith?
Nor do I think the wiring harness was damaged by improper use/sequencing of the power switches(assuming a correctly functioning relay).dusty wrote:I did mean to imply that it was a problem and I certainly do not believe that the wiring harness got smoked because of it.JPG wrote:The stop before 'reversing' problem is common to the Mark VII or any reversible induction motor.

However those unfamiliar with the crafter's station may become confused. It does not have a 'reverse' switch per se. Reverse running is the result of one of the two power on switches.
It was not my intention to question anything you posted. However the only thing that will occur by NOT allowing it to stop will be the continuation of it running in the same direction regardless of which switch is then flipped on.
It is best to not extrapolate things I post nor misinterpret intention and reach incorrect conclusions.

Re: Where did you get your shopsmith?
My first, a Model 10 E, 24996, I got at an
auction in Lawton OK, 1984 I think.
Maybe 1985.
The rest are Model 10s, so I've gotten
NOTHING from the MotherShip. but
parts, and dang few of them!
However, I'm looking at a NEW Mk5/V
for $250, with the bandsaw, jointer and
the wide belt sander. (Well, new to me,
but it does have the tubes along the main
and extension tables. 510 or 520?)
That would move me from the Cast Iron
world, into the sheet metal and aluminium
world! Hope I can hang!

10 ER, stripped down.
Basic 10ER, Parts machine. Will be a semi-dedicated drill-press machine.
10 ER, a "survivor" of the trailer fire, in the back yard, needing restoration. Has a Mk5 headrest. Finally, stripped down.
Numerous parts, for Model 10 stuff. Except for lower saw guard, A and B adapters, I've got it.
Looking for one more, or some 9 inch extension table raisers.
