Lots of storms last evening and piles of rain, a few minutes of hail and lots of wind. We weathered it fine.
However this became a windfall for the local squirrels when they found that the lid had come off my 33 gallon metal garbage can where the bird seed is stored.
My wife noticed the lid being off and let me know, but that was only about a half hour ago. Plenty of time for the squirrels to dig in. And dig in they did. chewing holes in both bags and filling up on seeds. I could not believe how much they managed to eat! I caught one still in the bag in the can as I walked up. What a little fur ball. It looked like it had eaten a baseball!
Of course to make things worst rain had gotten in the can as well. So seeds, hulls and wet seed to deal with. Had to dump a portion of the seeds and husks then I filled both feeders and put the remaining seeds in another bag. Don't have a good way to dry them so I might end up with sunflower sprouts. The can is such a mess that I just tuned it upside down and will deal with that another day. Seeds are in the back of the van now.
The squirrels are as bad as goats when it comes to having an abundance of food show up, they stuff them selves.
I was thinking that the amount of seed I had would be good for the rest of the year, now I might have to buy another bag. And come up with a more windproof solution to keeping the lid on.
I wish I could have seen the squirrels getting back in the squirrel house, the hole is large but I bet it was a tight fit today. Wondering if there are little ones in the house, its that time of year.
OK back to sorting papers and junk. Recycling/garbage day tomorrow. Took a load to Goodwill yesterday. Dusty isn't the only one struggling with attempting to downsize the stash of living here in this house almost 36 years. Sorting paper work is always a slow and painful process and the memories, ah the memories.

If there is more than they can eat the squirrels will also take nuts and seeds away and cache them for later consumption.
One of our neighbors used to feed them raw peanuts in the shell and we would find peanut plants sprouting in our garden.

Ed,
I am so glad you made that storm well. I have been watching the weather reports and noticed you were in an enhanced chance of heavier weather with high winds and hail possible. Also, if memory serves correctly, you were in the zone for tornadoes. And, I think JPG and Francis are in the same danger zone. Please check in and let us know if you are alright.

The weather radio was going off about every 10 minutes for hours yesterday. The wife got so tired of it she put it in the garage. Crying wolf too many times. I was using my phone app to watch the storms anyway. I have weather alerts on it too.
We are seeing snow showers today. They said to expect about an inch but the ground is not frozen anymore so good luck with it sticking unless we get days of cold again.
Didn't even watch the TV weather but I know it was ruff a lot of places and I hope everyone is OK.

'Severe' weather here was not very. Lotta rain and some wind, but that was mostly a hazard to the umbrellas if not held properly(holding by the handle was not a good idea today)

Now that squirrels know what is in the can it has a big red squirrel target painted on it. Good luck keeping them out!
