Noise from headstock once in Dado 'l' speed range

Picked up a used mark v headstock, oiled it and have it running. Unlike the last two used ones I got which ended up failing this one will actually start from hi speed (had it there for oiling) which was a good sign.

There is a squeal type noise with a bit of metal on metal to it between the end of the disc sand / beginning of dado range up til I hit jointer speed, once past jointer it goes away and sounds fairly smooth. Sounds smooth at the low ranges as well, i tensioned the belt as much as I could and the noise does not appear to be coming from the belts at all. If I had to guess it is coming from between the spt port and quill or below.

The speed change on this works great and the gears on the porkchop for moving it look good.

I have the other two machines available as parts, should I try pressing a new bearing on one of their control sheaves and swapping it in?

I would be looking at the control and idler sheave for wear in the middle range.

Ditto the floating and fan sheave.

The area of interest is where the motor belt rides between the sheaves

They are what is 'different' at different speed settings.

I'd look in the area of the motor fan sheave first. See if sheave is causing the squeal.

Tested it out some this morning, the sound is only in the L to O range of the dado, it is definitely coming from the control sheave / idle shaft.

I ran it with the belt cover and nameplate off to isolate the sound for sure. I also was able watch the spring retrainer clip it sat there motionless at every speed esnge except the l to o range, when it was in the rsnge where there was more noise I could see the clip bouncing around from vibration.

So two questions, how easy is it to remove the control sheave/idle assembly? If easy I could grab one from one of my parts Shopsmith as a temporary crutch.

Question two is, can I safely run this thing temporarily if I stay out of the problem speed range?

On a last note..everytime I run one of my Mark V's I'm amazed how loud it is compared to the 10er.

It is possible the control sheave bore/keyway is worn causing the control sheave to wobble.

Is the floating sheave(motor shaft) behaving during the 'issue'?

It is possible that the idler bearing is going. A lot of things are possible.

I do millwork as a job and rely on the Shopsmith's for work, had some molding to make for a Macy's to match existing so I decided to go ahead and run the machine, either it would make it or fall down and expose its problems.

It ran pretty well...I think lubricating cut down the noise some, still louder in a cerain range but not unbearable. Wasn't really much of a metal to metal noise, certaintly not under load. i ripped 100' of poplar, planed it all down from 13/16 to 5/8, and made two 1/8" dados in it. Put about 5 hours of continous work on the machine and it never got hot to the touch the way my other mark v's did. Was smoother running the planer as well, definitely a machine in better shape than the other two.

Have one big 3/8" x 5/16" dado to do tomorrow on it so that'll be a good test but so far so good. At some point I'll rebuild the drivetrain, will focus on getting one of the other headstocks up and running first. They seem to have more issues.
