Chattering speed dial face

So, I had never noticed this before but I recently took out my quadrant, changed poly V belts and drive belt and put it all back together.

After having put it back together and running it to higher speeds, I noticed the speed dial face (the round face that has all of the letters inscribed) was vibrating and chattering. It has some play in it so it isn't sitting tight, so just kind of chatters while the machine is running.

I am wondering if I lost some small part like a spring that holds enough tension on the dial face from the backside so it doesn't chatter. It doesn't do that one my other shopsmith headstocks, but I don't want to pull out their quadrants to check if someone already has the information on the subject.

Any information would be much appreciated!

Darn, I just reviewed pictures and there was this little anti-vibration spring that was there before and I must have lost it or banged it out because it isn't spanning the casting hole anymore and I didn't see it after I had removed the quadrant before so it must have come loose when I was removing the quadrant. I definitely can't find it anywhere at this point so will likely need a new one.

Does anyone know what part number that is? Bah! And after I thought I had it all put back together without issue.

It looks like the one in the picture. I just have no idea what part number it is.

It appears to be a 504196. Check it out on the exploded view parts diagram.

Did you look for it in the motor pan?

I lost my vibration spring due to breakage about 20 years ago. The dial works OK without it. I have been experimenting with an alternate spring arrangement by fabricating a spring that looks almost identical to the main spring but screwed under it pointing in the other direction. So far so good.

Found it! I had to take the headstock off and jiggle it around a bit and lay it on its side, but I eventually found it!

That thing is tiny and annoying!

Have you tried reinstalling it yet?

If you do not like it, get an "A" headstock.

The back of the 'dial' has a groove that the anti-rattle spring rides in. At above saw/joint, the groove disappears. You will notice a slight increase in resistance to increasing speed at that point.

In the original "A" casting a push plate with a small button rode in that groove. At the end of the groove, the push plate MUST be depressed to allow increasing speed above that point. The push plate mounted with the power switch and the button end went behind the dial(the reason the top of the circle behind the dial is open. IIRC the older dials had a 'stop' at the end of the groove - the current dials have a ramp there to allow the spring to lift out of the groove.

P.S. The current casting is a "C" headstock and has the relocated power switch in a squared hole.
