Exciting day is turning out even better.

Post by reible »

As some of you may have noticed I've been doing a lot more turning then I have in the past. I learned the ropes in HS, one of the tools we didn't have at home so it was my first experience there. I ended up spend a good deal of time turning of all things, fishing lures, a particular interest I had at the time.

When I got my shopsmith I did do some lathe work, a lot of projects require you to do some turning and while I could get by I certainly wasn't as skilled at it as I could have been. I did make some cool candle holders one year as Christmas gifts, wish I would have made one more to have kept....

Anyway a couple of years ago I became more interested and have since been picking up chucks, live centers, and all sorts of related tools and of course experience. Not counting my Festool and powerpro purchases the last 3 years most of my tool budget has been lathe related.

One tool that I have been doing without is a nice larger roughing gouge. I sought out some advice from one of our turners here and placed an order. The tool arrived today! It is Crown 1-1/4" Will need to get it sharpened up and tested out. I sort of feel like I've arrived. Has anyone else experienced something like that, doesn't have to be lathe related????

Speaking to that, my wife and I were out for a walk just after the last big wind and she not only encouraged me but helped carry home some branches for more twig pots. She wants me turn more of them, I think she likes them. Maybe it the small size that doesn't take up much room in our house???

I guess I'm in my turning phase now.

Time for a walk. We are seeing some wild spring flowers around here! The early bulbs have been flowering for more then a week already. Look and feels like spring is almost here.

A "turning phase" is good, Ed. I have turned spindle type objects and bowls. Not so into turning spindle type objects; but, I really enjoyed turning bowl type objects. Turned a few pens but that got old for me.

Now I want to get back into bowl turning.

I'm awaiting an order from Doug Thompson and can definitely relate to your excitement.

On a related note, for a great review of turning fundamentals, it's hard to beat this video
