used power pro
I bought a used power pro upgrade headstock. It runs and operates as it should, except that it makes some slight noise. I took dust cover off and ran the machine and listened-can't tell much about where noise originates. Belts look plenty tight and in good condition. the only visible concern is that the motor pulley has some wobble to it like it may not be straight? I haven't tried to adjust anything, but have tried high, intermediate and low speeds. The sound you can faintly hear is scrich, scrich. I looked for any possible rubbing parts-but see none? Anyone with suggestion? thanks-lee

Re: used power pro
Lee, if you have the documentation I'd begin by going through it to verify the alignment, belt tension, etc.
If you don't have the documentation PM me and I can scan my instructions and send it to you.

I have all of the docs and that is where i was planning to start, but what about the motor pulley? Somehow it looks out of round as it rotates and I was wondering if that part might be defective and make vibration? The previous owners(two) called shopsmith about it and shopsmiths' suggestion was to use it as is. Rather than contact them again, i was thinking about calling up nova since they made it for shopsmith. Thanks for the reply

I doubt NOVA made the pulley.ljw345 wrote:I have all of the docs and that is where i was planning to start, but what about the motor pulley? Have you determined whether the pulley is securely tightened to the motor shaft and correctly positioned on it?
That is where I would start.

Re: used power pro
Even if Nova made the part in question, it is doubtful that they would discuss your problem. They did not manufacture for you but rather for Shopsmith.
But let's put all of that aside. You said the pulley appears to be out of round it wobbles). A few measurements should confirm that one way or the other.
If I understand correctly, you are the third owner and at least one of the previous two had the same problem and was turned away by Shopsmith. Are you sure that a call of Shopsmith is not in order. I would certainly call them. At least you might ascertain whether or not the warranty even applies to you (third owner).
Does the unwanted noise occur if you spin the drive shaft manually (think disk sander)? Turning under manual power can you detect the wobble?

Re: used power pro
Pulley should not wobble. Motor may have been dropped at some point and bent the pulley. I would replace the pulley and start from there.
Re: used power pro
Call Shopsmith. Ask them if you can order a new motor pulley.
My original motor pulley was made with the center hole not centered.
At that time there was another case of the off centered shaft hole. I think you can do a search and find the threads that talk about that issue.
My original motor pully was replace by Shopsmith when I sent the whole unit in for repair.

Re: used power pro
I am waiting for responses from teknatool and from shopsmith.I started by taking off the lower motor cover from the headstock after i took off the dust cover from the front of the machine. When run-you can distinctly hear noise from the drive sleeve bearing at the eccentric, and a whirring sound from the opposite side for the dvr motor from under the plastic cover. I was curious what the source of the internal noise in the motor is-almost like something is loose inside? In the instruction manual-does it say how much tension is supposed to be on the belts?
Re: used power pro
the whirring noise you gear from the non drive side (under the Plastic cover) of the motor is the whirring of the fan that is used to determine the motor speed.
I'm not good at enumerating the technical details, but you can find them in the PowerPro details listed in the Shopsmith description of the motor.
You should call Shopsmith and ask to speak with Wes.

Re: used power pro
Thanks chuck-I figured that out this am. What i haven't figured out is how to determine how much belt tension there should be at the motor. when I attempted to do the tension balancing at the eccentric bushing, the idler shaft wants to drop down the hole when you try to turn the eccentric. With belt tension on it, it is difficult to turn? any ideas? thanks again-lee
