Finally took the time to check out your video and I'm glad I did. Well done! That would be both the work piece and the video.

I really have to try this sometime. I have to come up with some thing with a lot less pieces just in case I mess up I don't want to waste the wood or the time on a big project to get stated with. Seeing the video gives me a much better understanding of the process involved at least,

Very nice Chris. I have been wanting to try out my ringmaster in doing some segmented projects. I haven't really used it since I got it. Maybe this is the inspiration I need. Have you tried the ringmaster?

Fantastic project and video! Great to see the Shopsmith in use and to finally see the outfeed table.

Couple of questions:

1. Do you use a program to help with the design? Both in terms of segment numbers and color and placement to achieve the desired pattern?

2. How do you mount that "deflector" that directs the segments away from the blade?

3. Is the segment cutting jig your own design or did you find instructions for it somewhere (and can you share)?

Thanks for the kind comments. What I did not show were the mistakes thanks to some clever editing! Had a mother of all catches when performing what would have been the "final cut". Thank God the glue held firm and the interior walls were thick enough to turn out the grove I made!

To answer some of Al's questions:

1: I used a program called Segment Pro to design the vase (www.woodturnerpro.com)Easy to learn and produces a cut list as well as a PDF to align the patterns.

2: The deflector mounts with good old double stick carpet tape! Keeps it simple...

3: The jig is called a "Wedgie Sled" and plans I used are here: www.segeasy.com/wedgies.htm

I do not have a ringmaster, but have watched videos. You can make a nice bowl with one within limitations. Not a lot of leeway in shapes unless I am missing something. Not so much segmenting as layering, but it is on my "to do list". I believe it is refereed to as making a "bowl from a board"...
