Off to the County Fair

Today is a big day, a good, a day that I have looked forward to ever since the kids were in FFA and 4H. It used to be the animal competition but no more. We stayed there for a week - eating and sleeping in the barns. Now it is arts and crafts and food. I very seldom eat corn dogs but I got hooked at the Dallas County Fair where I had my first Fletcher's Corn Dog.

Fletchers, a corn dog to die for.

No Fletchers at this county fair and no Shopsmith booth either. I miss them both but it is hard for me to say which one I miss the most.

Thank You, Beeg. I did enjoy the day as it was a day spent with the family. No rides. Just people watching, vendors booths and food. The food was disappointing this year. Disappointing and expensive. The brisket dinner combo cost $16 and was not good at all. No Fletchers corn dogs so NO corn dogs.

My wife wanted a snow cone. She got her snow cone but would you believe $5 for a cup of shaved ice with some flavored syrup.

I am in agreement that many of the good things we had in the past, no longer exist in abundance. Sometimes "they" call it improvement?!.

NOTE: The County fairs I go to always come around in August, after the kids animals start to mature.

As for food - I could always fine anything that is fried.

One exception to fried food is frozen bananas. We (the Optimists) bought cases of bananas, peeled and froze them, stuck in a popsicle stick, then when sold, dipped them in warm chocolate. They sold like they were going out of stile. Good fund raiser.

We are more familiar with late summer or early fall fairs. Maybe it is the area where you live?

I like smaller less populated fairs, state fairs are just too large for me. We don't go like we use to. Food prices are high but most places at least have a senior rate on one of the days. I don't do rides so the fairs that charge the big bucks and give you free rides are a waste to me.

But now that I have it in my mind I might just find a fair to attend this year. Just to walk the barns and exhibits mostly, don't need the grandstand or over priced food to make it a good day.
