I am wondering if it is appropriate to ask for used parts on this site. I realize Mother Ship sells new stuff and that is fine. Never actually read anything about where this is frowned upon or taboo.
Don't want to offend anyone but there are so many used shop smith machines and or parts it is ashame not to use them and or discard them for new ones.
I am thankful for this side and certainly don't want to get into trouble or cause a stink.
Thanks,
Tom

Re: Looking for parts for shop smith machines used
Like many other questions, the answer is "it depends."
Shopsmith sponsors these forums, and it would be impolite at best to use them to compete with the forum sponsor!
I know that a number of people who have Shopsmith-related businesses are very careful NOT to appear to be advertising or promoting their businesses on this site.
That being said, I have ALSO seen many cases where someone posts that they're looking for a specific part or item, and someone else will respond and say, "I have one of those. PM me." As long as it's something done occasionally and on a case-by-case basis, I don't think SS would object.
Your best three sources are:
1. Shopsmith themselves. They have replacement parts for machines going back to the Dark Ages...except when they don't, and then the wait can be very long. Also, of course, the price will tend to be higher than if you can find what you want on...
2. Craigslist. Prices here tend to be lower, and you can often find something in your local area. However, mostly you will find complete Shopsmith machines or Special Purpose Tools here, not small piece parts.
3. EBay. LOTS of parts for sale here. Prices tend to be higher than Craigslist, but lower than buying new from Shopsmith.

It is true that Shopsmith has not "openly" objected but that does not make it right.
Shopsmith has made it clear that this forum is not to be used as a trading post; "for commercial purposes". You can banter around about what "commercial purposes" encompasses but I believe we all know what Shopsmith meant.
