10 ER for sale locally for $200.00. If the old motor goes out on on of these, is the motor bracket such that you could easily bolt-on a new 1 hp motor to it?

Also, how easy is it to replace the quil bearing if necessary?

One more question. Will the lathe tool rest and the tail stock from a MKV 500 fit it?

Yes the motor bracket will mount any #56 motor frame (I think that is the right one. If not someone will correct me.). The problem comes in with the start capaciter. The AO Smith motors (and some others) back at the time had the capaciter mounted on the side. Now days most motors have the capacitor mounted on the top. This interferes with the bench. There are solutions so it is not a big problem.

The quill bearings and the drive sleeve bearings are very easy to replace.

No the MK V tool rest will not fit. The mounting tube is larger. The MK V tail stock will not fit either. It mounts in a completely different way. Those parts are readily available on eBay as are most other parts you might need.

Just to clarify, the tool rest arm, (the part that mounts in the carriage), will not work, but the tool rest will. 10er and Mk5/V tool rests all have 3/4 shafts and are interchangeable.

I dont misjudge John, I think he meant to say the new motors capacitors are on the bottom of the motor, and you have to cut out a notch for that on the bench you mount the ER on. Sorry, I have a pinched nerve in my neck, only pain free, head turned left and chin down.

Most people would say the motor bracket is mounted on the bottom of the motor. I think most motors are mounted with the bracket down so that means that the capacitor is on the top of the motor. The 10ER motor is mounted upside down, hence the issue.

My brother, Sterling here, has mounted a 1 HP HF
motor on one of his (formerly my) Model 10s.

Yes, the motors mount, mounting base up.

ANY 56 frame motor will fit, except for the
capacitor. My solution, raise the whole
machine. Since the weakest mode of the
Model 10 (or any Shopsmith) is the table saw,
raise the whole rig, and get a decent table saw.

Oh, (and this might upset a few of the "Aluminium"
fans) the Model 10 is the best at lathe and both
versions of drill-press.

And, the model 10 is the WORST to put in vertical
drill-press mode. Something about all that Cast
Iron.

Dan, there is no "speed reducer" for
the Model 10,

however, belts and pulleys WILL achieve
the speeds you want.

The Model 10, is STILL the strongest
Shopsmith built. Period!
