Wood filler

Anybody have a way to slow down wood filler from drying up after being opened. I don't use it all that often and I try to close it tight after using.

I use "Timber Mate" wood filler. It's water based, so if it dries out simply add water and stir it back to the consistency you want. So far it's worked good for me.

I am kind of fond of "Durham's Rock Hard Water Putty". It is a powder and will keep in the container for many years...

I have also used it as a grain filler by mixing it runny and brushing it on the surface and sanding it the next day. I once made an large item to be painted out of rather rough CDX sheathing. I mixed the putty a little wet and troweled it into the face and let it dry over night. It sanded nice and I watched the item for several years (I had made it for a company I worked for) and the paint stayed very nice.

I have found that placing the container in a sealed plastic bag will slow down the drying process.

Laquer thinner works best.

I still use the old school 2 part mix from high school ,,,mix it as ya go , a little yellow or white glue and saw dust from the disc sander from the stock you are using ,,matches the grain color to a Tee and very strong . .

I have done this when I have enough sander dust.
