Today in the shop (long drill bit holder)

Post by reible »

I don't know how many of you have any of these 12" long drill bits, often called "aircraft" bits but I just happened to misplace one of mine. I didn't know is was misplaced until I wanted to use it. I didn't buy a set so there was/is no case.

I don't have a full set but have gotten the ones I need when I need them. I have the 1/16", 1/8", 3/16" and now two 1/4" bits.

They have resided in a drawer will all sorts of odds and ends of drill bit and they are always down on the bottom mostly because I don't need them often. They also always seem to find a why to get in a place where they are difficult to dig out.

I'm working in the shop today putting things away, find new homes for something and in general just messing about. One of the things I found was this section of conduit left over from some project. I was about ready to throw it in a bag of metal to recycle when an idea came to me. Why not use it for a drill bit holder???

I have some other "stopper" that fit the conduit snugly for the bottom and a gripper/holder that would allow it to mounted somewhere. Pretty simple but with the holder I can take it with me as needed and still have a place for it when it comes back. It also means, I hope, that I will not misplace a bit.

Here are the pictures pretty much all I'm going say about it.

That is   a great idea. Now write on the side of the conduit, "LONG DRILL BITS". ;)

My father-in-law used to store things in the shed in black plastic garbage bags, everything stayed clean, but as he didn't label anything it was always a treasure hunt trying to find things when they were needed.
