A little down tonight. - Alzheimer's, the family curse.

Post by robinson46176 »

It was a nice day in Indiana today for our 54th wedding anniversary (Diana and I). We just hit a few yard sales and had lunch at the Sirloin Stockade in Columbus IN about 30 miles south of here. It was not really a celebration as most of my thoughts today as they have been all week were about my sister (my only sibling) who passed away at 77 last Saturday AM in Pensacola FL after a lengthy struggle with Alzheimer's. She was laid to rest today but we couldn't be there due to the difficulty we are currently finding with any extended traveling. She has been surrounded through it all by her caring husband and their sizeable family.
We will actually celebrate our anniversary on a happier day...
I call it the family curse...
My father was diagnosed with it some years before he died but he actually died of congestive heart failure before the Alzheimer's went into the final stages. My mother had been his primary caretaker but my parents and my wife and I all lived on the same farm about 400' apart.
During those years my father's 3 living sisters all developed it one by one. I spent a great deal of time dealing with the ever changing problems and as the only able family member living locally I became the family problem handler.
My maternal grandfather was diagnosed with it. As a kid he and I used to hunt together and we were pretty close. By the time he passed he didn't know me at all. Cancer took him before the Alzheimer's did but it was a close race.
Then my mother developed it and she rode the train all of the way to the end. At the end stage she just shut down. It was a long terrible experience. She became unbelievably hard to deal with and I had really scary problems with her wandering. My wife and I both came out of that one with strong symptoms of PTSD.
In doing genealogy research I discovered that my maternal grandfather's grandmother had spent the end of her life confined to a mental institution. Of course they had no idea what Alzheimer's or other dementia was in those days, they just called it "senility".
I later found that my paternal great grandmother's death certificate lists her cause of death as "senility"...
As I said "family curse".
Living as far away as she did my sister was really only around my mother a couple of times a year but after one trip she became concerned enough to go home and had herself tested and had an MRI. They said she showed no signs of it but when it hit it hit hard. When she passed last week she had not spoken at all for several months.
My odds are not looking real good... My GP has applied the standard test a couple of times and so far so good. I try to stay busy and physically active and I keep always trying new things to challenge myself.
I guess I don't really have a point here, I just had to unload... Pesky week.

Francis,

I am so sorry about your family situation and the curse. I feel your pain as we have lost many good friends here in Pensacola to this stealth situation. It is really hard to see this once active and intelligent folks slip into that ugly sunset of life. I am also sorry for the loss of your only sibling. I hope you have great memories and that you can focus on them to bring you some comfort. Blessings to you and yours.

My grandmother (who died at 98) ended with it and was practically a vegetable at the end. Both my parents were very mentally active until the end so I hope I can prevent my wife from having to deal with me in that way. She has a life long dear friend that is is the beginning stage of it right now. It isn't something I would wish on anyone.

Congrats on your 54th! We all do what we have to do at the end of the day.

i hate to post about the worst,,,, so I will keep my thoughts short.,,,,My neighbor is 87 , I have known him since I was a born ,, I grew upp with his kids and still live across from him 55 ears later , he use to take us kids for ice cream cones , taught me to hunt track and fish when my dad was working ,,He was a great mentor for a young kid growing up in the 60's when times were not that great .

He came home yesterday from the hospital , they thought they were going to take off 2 of his toes , they couldn't do it because his BP wasn't strong enough, when they tired to sedate him his artery collapsed. He doesn't have enough blood pressure to get the blood to his feet or to replace any arteries .

This may seem soft for a old man in my mid 50's who has seen life and death like most every one else,,,,,, but the fact these folks were our mentors brothers sisters parents or just good people,,, well it means a lot , the worst thing we can do is forget them.

Sorry for the loss ,,I hope you cn remember the good memories when your heart starts to ache,,,keep in mind,,, the memories we share and pass on are what defines us all .
