I finally got around to getting my Veteran Designation Driver License here in IL. I think it was about two years ago they announced this but while it was on my list of things to do it didn't make it to the top until now.
Here in IL they will add the "Veteran" to your divers license but you need to visit (or mail in forms) a IL Dept. of Veteran's Affairs field office with paper work. They then check your records and fill in the required data base information then stamp your forms to take to the DMV. It was pretty painless but it does take some of your time depending on waiting times or other glitches.
With the stamped paper work I went to the DMV where they get you fixed up. If you are not eligible for renewal at the time then it's a $5 fee for the new license. I was close enough that I was able to renew my license and pay the standard $10 fee.
If you don't drive then you can get an ID with the same information.
They no longer print the licenses at the DMV so I will not have it in hand for a couple of weeks.
The idea is that places that give discounts to vets will not need paper work from you, just show them your license/ID and that should take care of it. We will see how and if that works.
I have no idea if other states do this or not but it seemed like an improvement even if it took me a couple of years to do it.

I do not think that Florida has such a sweet provision as of yet. And, I do not see it in the near future. However, if you go to the VA for medical treatment, whether disabled or not, you can get a free VA card and show it when you make purchases. It works well at Lowe's and Michaels. I rarely go to Home Depot as the assortments there in our town are not as good as Lowe's. From what I read of other posts on this site, Home Depot has much better selections than here. Maybe, I should look at a couple of the other Home Depot stores. And, I will try using my VA card there.
Glad to see that Illinois has progressed to cover veterans, whether life time or single hitchers.

Don't remember if I saw this here or not but effective Veterans Day all honorably discharged veterans will be able to shop on line at military PX stores, but not in brick and mortar px's.

Kansas does it, got mine last renewal. Just had to take DD214 with me and they added to license.

OK, I was shopping with my brother,
(Sterling here) we were at Lowes,
and he was buying something kind
of expensive. I flashed my VA ID
card, and the cashier subtracted
the right amount.
He is a Vet, too. But hadn't gone
through the trouble to get the VA
card. (He's on HomeD's list, though.)

10 ER, stripped down.
Basic 10ER, Parts machine. Will be a semi-dedicated drill-press machine.
10 ER, a "survivor" of the trailer fire, in the back yard, needing restoration. Has a Mk5 headrest. Finally, stripped down.
Numerous parts, for Model 10 stuff. Except for lower saw guard, A and B adapters, I've got it.
Looking for one more, or some 9 inch extension table raisers.

Somewhere on another thread on this forum someone mentioned that Lowes can link your veteran status to your MyLowes card. That prompted me to log in to my MyLowes card and sure enough, there is a place to enter your DD214 info. They somehow verify the info and a couple of days later I got an email saying I am qualified for a 10% veterans discount when I use my MyLowes card. I don't have to do anything but have my card scanned and the discount is automatically applied. The MyLowes card also stores your purchases, receipts, etc. so that you can keep track of your purchases. A great way to handle it, in my opinion. Thanks to whoever mentioned this in the other post. Now if only Home Depot would follow suit!

New York state also will allow a veteran status on your drivers license.

North Dakota has the option to ID veterans on driver's licenses too, but I haven't taken the time to add it to mine. Maybe at next renewal I'll think to take along a copy of my DD214. I haven't really needed it because I still carry my old military ID card.
