I May Soon Go Incommunicato

Post by dusty »

I just received a call from 800.935.6531 informing me that the support subscription on my computer has expired. A week or so ago I was inundated with calls from 520.906.6107 informing me of a failure detected on my computer that they could fix if I would just call back. I also get frequent calls from 800.605.1570 with a notice that my Microsoft license has expired.

Do people really fall for these scams? They must or they would not persist.

I've gotten those calls.

I ask them what kind if computer i have.
When they can't answer, I proceed with
all kinds of racial abuse!

10 ER, stripped down.
Basic 10ER, Parts machine. Will be a semi-dedicated drill-press machine.
10 ER, a "survivor" of the trailer fire, in the back yard, needing restoration. Has a Mk5 headrest. Finally, stripped down.
Numerous parts, for Model 10 stuff. Except for lower saw guard, A and B adapters, I've got it.

Looking for one more, or some 9 inch extension table raisers.

I guess enough people do or it wouldn't be happening. My solution is I never answer a call that I don't recognize the number. Certainly not toll free area codes and any area code where I don't know anybody. Scammers have taken to spoofing local numbers too. I don't answer them either. There was a piece on the national news just this morning about these robo calls.

I don't get a lot of such calls maybe 1 or 2 a week at the most. Maybe it has to do with where you live. I figure if it is a legit call and they really want to talk to me they will leave a voice mail. If no, I guess it was not important.

Every once in a while I will answer one because I am not sure. The trick is don't say anything. It seems these computers are programed to respond to a voice on your end. If you don't say anything the call just hangs up.

Except most of them are canned recordings from a computer. No one is actually listening.

The wife and I rarely get those type of calls. Could be because we pay a little to not have our number listed. When we do, I'll take the call and keep asking the caller if they want to buy a truck. It can be very entertaining.
