Hello everyone. I'm new and an infant when it comes to woodworking but very excited to start. I recently came across SS on Craigslist and wanted your opinion on which way I should go. I do not have a lot of upfront money so I'm limited on my options. There is a 510 for double my budget in pristine condition, alas out of my reach.
I came across a 10ER well maintained and most parts for $350 and two Mark V which is not well maintained for $350 and $300.
Minus the concerns with rust (all should be easily cleaned up), paint and motor. I have not engaged the sellers yet so I'll assume the motors are in decent shape and may just need to replace bearings. Of course if motor is shot then it will be a no go but they are listed as operational and still used.
Would it be better to get a well maintained 10ER or get a "greenie" Mark V and slowly restore?
Little bit too much for the 10ER. It looks like a great machine, and has the jigsaw, but it lacks the speed changer and factory bench and retract casters. With the speed changer, that is what I would go with and is worth the price being asked. Now with that said, and passing on the 10ER, the second one down for 350 would be my preference if everything is good. Look at the SS website to see what is "normal" for equipment (push pads, blades, sanding disks, drill chuck, fence, etc) and make your decision on that. Everything is very available, but it does add to the cost. Those bench tubes would clean up nice.
I will let the other experts chime in here, but that is my 2 cents.

The MK V for $300 would be my choice as it has the connector tubes of a 510 upgrade kit on the mounted table and on the floating tables next to the leg. It has a 510 fence under/behind the sanding disk on the tubes as well. I can not tell what else is included but the 510 table upgrade is quite expensive if you were to do it later. This would basically give you a 510 within you budget.

Thank you for the info and reading the link provided. The $350 does come with nearly all the standard accessories which you mentioned. So that does bode well for that.

Good catch, I missed the 510 upgrade there. Unfortunately, that one seems to not have a lot of accessories so I'll need to hunt for those. It only comes with tables and jointer.
I'm working with the CFO (my wife) to not go insane if I spend double for one of these other two 510s listed.
Very clean machine with lots of SS hand tools and most accessories.
Or this one which is not as clean but more accessories (scroll saw, too)
If I had to choose between all of the ones that you presented here, not including price, I would choose the last one with the band saw, belt sander, jointer and you said scroll saw SPTs (Special Purpose Tools). These SPTs increase the variety of things that can be made or accomplished. New each costs over $500 while you can normally find them used for about $150 each depending on where you are. As you increase your woodworking abilities these are normally some of the first additions you will want to make to your SS. The condition of all of the units is not that bad and all can be restored with some work. The one with the SPTs is not in too bad a shape at all, I only see any amount of rust on the jointer. Normal accessories can be found, some of the things like push pad or sticks and feather boards can be after market. The SS does have a narrower miter slot so some items may need to be modified to work. Not being able to see the whole ad does limit what I can tell also comes with each unit. Where are you located?

I gotta agree with Brenda! The last is the best 'choice'.
Only one caveat - it is an early 510 which IMHO is better, but others will disagree(newer is better???).
As for the rusty bench tubes on the greenies, that is common since they were not plated, but only painted originally(also they are a different od from all other models.
Welcome to the forum!!!
Oh BTW the greenies likely have a 3/4 hp motor where as the last two will have a 1 1/8 hp motor.

I agree completely Brenda. That is my current choice as well now ... FWIW

I looked at all the ads for the ones that you posted. I would still choose the last one with all the SPTs if you can swing the price. It is a jig saw instead of a scroll saw but basically have the same function just the design is different. It also appears to have a support table. I do not see a miter gauge or a tail stock but the sanding disk and tool rest are there. Smaller items could also just not be pictured. Ask about them and see if you can get the price lowered if missing to cover replacement costs. Also this unit has been posted for about a month, so you may be able to negotiate a lower price since it has been listed for so long.

One missed detail that adds a lot of value to the 10ER. It has the rare joiner mount headrest. I think they sell for quite a bit on their own. The standard one can be had rather easily on EBAY.
