10er Lathe Tool Rest Modification?

10er Lathe Tool Rest Modification?
I was using my 10er today as a lathe, and when turning a goblet, I encountered a "need" for a modification.
The goblet blank lenght was about 5" and 2" x 2' square. I placed the blank between centers, and my tool rest did not cover but half of the blank lenght. I would have to turn the entire tool rest around to do the other half. I didn't need to in this case because I just turned a spigot on the headstock end to mount to a chuck.
So, I have a need for a modification that would let me use a regular banjo from a stand alone type lathe. Anyone know of any such modifcation?
I was also interested in the Universal Tool Rest which would be great; but, I don't know that it will work on the 10Er.

I've had that problem too on short pieces. It will be interesting to see how others solved it. Most of the time I just use the quill extended full length and have the carriage all the way to the left.

Yes, it will be interesting. However, it may be something I just need to accomodate. I have thought of a modification; but, it would require welding and a piece of steel with a slot in it which I am not sure would be availabe at a reasonable price or going through the expense of having a machine shop mill one out for me. I guess I could always buy a Bridgeport mill.moggymatt wrote:I've had that problem too on short pieces. It will be interesting to see how others solved it. I am not familiar with the post size on the 10 ER but assuming they are similar the post is easily available as well as bar stock to weld to it to create any tool rest you would want. Any welding shop can do it for a few bucks. I added a photo of one I welded up for doing shallow bowls

Thanks, Paul. That is almost what I had in mind.I like it. By the way, per my measurments, the tool post is 1" diameter on the 10er. What I envisioned is a set-up like yours with the center of the bar milled out, along the lenght of the bar, enough to accept a standard banjo. Also, I envisioned just putting the 1" diameter posts directly into the carriage.

I will get mine out tomorrow and check for you. I think it should work just fine.Dansmith wrote:I was using my 10er today as a lathe, and when turning a goblet, I encountered a "need" for a modification.

I think I found a solution to the issue in the original post. I think a #2 (inside and outside) morse taper extension will work. I found a couple online that extend either 3.5" or 4" longer. They are only a around $20.00.

John, I'm also interested in how a UTR will work on a 10ER -- my current plans are to raise the bench top and use my 10ER with speed changer as my main lathe.jsburger wrote:I will get mine out tomorrow and check for you. To thicken the plot, I'm in the throes of restoring a pretty little 1940-vintage Craftsman lathe that I found on Craigslist. It has only a 10" swing over the bed, but the spindle is equipped for outboard turning. So I'm thinking that the UTR could also be used as an outboard tool rest for the Craftsman. Which would certainly be consistent with the "Universal" moniker!
Re: 10er Lathe Tool Rest Modification?
Well, not good news. It mounts just fine on the 10ER. However the standard tool rests (10ER and MK V) are too high. I think with a custom tool rest you can get low enough for it to work just fine. Like a post with a solid rod welded to it. You won't loose any adjust-ability with it because of the Universal Tool Rest.BuckeyeDennis wrote:John, I'm also interested in how a UTR will work on a 10ER -- my current plans are to raise the bench top and use my 10ER with speed changer as my main lathe.jsburger wrote:I will get mine out tomorrow and check for you. Thanks, John. By the way, how does the UTR mount to the carriage? No holes in mine except for the screw lift (and of course, the 2 table mounting 1" holes).
