Turkey Vultures

Post by jsburger »

We had a visit from some Turkey Vultures this morning. At one time there were four out there. There is something dead on the ground they are feeding on. There are actually three in the picture. The third one is on the ground just below and to the left of the white sign on the fence post.

Several would roost in a dead tree close to where I grew up in southern IL. I learned not to get too close. They have a "distink" and effective defense mechanism.

Looks like they are giving you the bird and flashing you at the same time.

Well not turkey vultures, but a few weeks ago I had some black vultures. See them flying around all the time, but they usually fly pretty high, because we are not really out in the country, but rather pretty big neighborhood near the country. At any rate, I got cats that stay outside in a fenced in area, (cat fence is about 7 feet tall) cats come and go through a doggy door at will...for some reason I saw a vulture come down and landed in a tree outside the fence in our yard...omg that thing was huge must have had a five foot wing span. Usually vultures just go after dead things, but he sure looked like he was eyeing my cats, scared me to death, started to get my 20 gauge out, but being in a congested neighborhood, I decided well maybe just get my beebe gun rifle out and let him know this was a bad place to hang out. When I came out with the gun, pumped her up about 10 or 12 times and shot him...lol...couldn't hardly miss him he was so big, was only about 40 feet away and about 20 feet up in the tree sitting on a branch. Wasn't enough to kill him, but sure got his attention...lol..nailed him right in the chest. He took off in a hurry, two more flew off with him I didn't even see. Haven't seen any since, not even flying overhead, so they must have got the hint..lmao..so funny he was looking right at me when I shot him, don't think he ever saw a gun before, probably was wondering what I was doing...he knows now, he got educated...
