home made cross cut stop

Post by ARCretired »

Just a simple afternoon project

I saw the SS "Cross Cutter" 556466 ($39.95) recently e-mailed to me. I already had some sliding T-nuts, so thought I would make a similar one. Earlier I had made a simple cross cutting stop - just a small block of oak w' a T-nut, so having another one with more adjustment looked like a good idea. Hardware cost, other than the T-nut, was about $5, including several sizes of bolts. I used steel (not brass) threaded inserts in the oak block. The thread is 1/4" dia - 20 threads / inch, so it is coarser than the SS version, mostly because I couldn't find fine thread inserts in the local hardware stores. However 1/8 turn = .00625", which is comparable to the 1/128 = .0078125" for a quarter turn of the SS version. The bolts are flat head furniture fasteners that are tightened with the SS allen wrench and a wrench for the nut. They are available at most hardware stores. You could use any type of bolt of course. The wood is two pieces of 3/4 oak, screwed together. This allows clearance for the bolts to be screwed farther into the block for more adjustment, without changing to a different size bolt.

Between the two stops, there is around 3" of adjustment (more if you use longer bolts), with 4 different surface locations (2 bolt heads, 2 block wood surfaces).

I'm not sure why the image isn't visible to you. It appears OK when I just logged in. ????

I'll re-send in a different format. The first one was a Tiff image. This one is a Jpeg.

I can see it now! Nicely done. Yes, that's kind of what I thought a homemade version might look like.

I see it clearly now.

Yes, looks like you have built a $40.00 jig that should work very well.

Thanks for posting this. I do not believe I have ever seen those flathead screws like that. I shall make a trip to the hardware store. I need a few in the shop. I may have to hunt for them online though because I would like them to be 10-32.

Here's one link to the bolts. https://www.fastenal.com/products?r=~%7 ... ~&pageno=1

Furniture bolts also know as connector bolts. You can do this search "furniture bolts allen head" for additional info. After a quick search it looks like they are only available in 1/4 20 but it was a quick search.
