10ER main table, boy that was a lot of work....

I'm not sure when the main table was last cleaned/waxed but it must have been a while. It's still not done but I think the hard part is over. I think I have about 3 hours in on it at this point.

Here is a picture when I was about half way with the cleaning:

I still have the edges to do and I think that will be with a wire brush. Then clean it with solvent to see of a few of those spots are actually something that can rub off. The it will be to time to do a final wax and buff and it will be ready to be assembled again.

I hope the extension table isn't this bad.

BTW I got out my ladder so the table was at a nicer height for working on. If you have one of these or see one really cheap they are especially handy for projects like this.

Finished the main table and the auxiliary table. They are never going to be perfect, flaws in the casting and years of use.... what did I expect for a tool make back in 1950's.

So here is the pictures so you know it happened

Now this is something that I had to laugh at. When the table was tapped for the mounting screws, these threads here:

They never dumped out the chips! And when I took it apart I had it upside down so they didn't fall out then either. But when I took them out this time and turned the table over.....

And there was more but only this part got dumped where I could collect it. This is from the two threaded holes, I expect that much was in the other two holes but we will never know as it went on the ground.

Just think those chips have been hold up there for over 65 years!

Nice job Ed ! Truly a piece of woodworking history that you have restored. What a wonder it must have been to unbox that machine in the 50's all shiny new.

Here is a question for some of you other 10ER people. The main table on mine has through holes to mount the front rail. I seem to recall that when I did my brothers the holes were tapped.

On mine the screws go through and have square nuts on the back side. There is no indications that I can see that the holes were ever tapped.

The auxiliary table on the other hand has tapped holes.

Any history lessons here? Now if it is not a vintage thing then maybe a previous owner decided to drill the holes out for some reason?

The three 10ER's I have in the shop all have tapped holes in all the tables. So does the extra cast iron aux table. I have two more in the garage but I can't get to them right now.

So I'm back at putting things together this afternoon. Boy they almost drilled this hole too close. I can even see some deflection of the metal. I'm guess the design was right but the machining, well it left something to be desired.

Interesting.

I just checked all mine, all three of the extension tables and two of the main tables are tapped, but the third main table (from #94997) is through drilled and has nuts.

They look to be original, perhaps this was a way to salvage the table casting if the threaded holes were not up to specification.

I see you posted again while I was writing. This observation would seem to support the theory that this was a way to salvage miss drilled tables.

Well the plot thickens as they say. Mine is number 94506. My thought is now that this was a change made towards the end of production for one or many reasons. It might have been cheaper to just do away with having to tap the holes, just a few minutes here and there makes up some savings and it is more then likely cheaper to buy the bolts and the added time to have it assembled that way rather then the time it took to tap the holes.

Anyway that is also a possibility.
