Templating system hack?

I recently watched a video on a template creation system

And found it an interesting alternative to double sided tape.

The clamps don’t really seem “that” unique and was thinking that the microjig match fit dovetail (and similar dovetail clamps) might be an acceptable alternative.

I’ve broken my share of templates made from hardboard because the double stick tape held too well and think this might be a reasonable alternative.

I plan to just use MDF for the template material, however, I couldn’t find pricing for the sandwiched template stock, but presume fabrication of something similar should be plausible.

Great minds think alike.
Although, wouldn't using BB or similar negate the need for the hardboard? For a one or two time use, the MDF would probably suffice.
I've rubbed TBIII into the MDF edges to harden them, as well.
But, I'd need another set of Match Fits. Oh, well.

Very, very tempting. But, I have been using two sided tape for years and have never had a real issue. I find that if I DO NOT CLAMP to the tape and I do not leave it there for long I have no problem separating the pieces. I do, occasionally, have a tough time getting the adhesive residue off of my work piece.

I don't see me going this way. For one thing I like to keep the template thin so it is easier to get right and smooth. And I don't just use bearing bits but also guide bushings. The guide bushings are short of 1/4" so this system would not work well there. And unless you are doing large projects the clamps would get in the way when doing hand held projects. So it would have a very limited use in my shop.

I do use tape and I like the tape from American Eagle. It is a thin tape that holds well, I do no like cloth tape. The hardest part can be getting the backing off especially if you like just ripping it so I cut it will a scissors. It is also thin enough that you can not feel any movement due to the tape.

There are other ways of clamping as well, nailing or screwing to the back side, or cut away sections. Clamping to jigs with wedges also works sometimes, as does about a dozen other ways without paying so much for that system.

Sorry not going to happen for me.

As I very rarely need templates, I’ll pass on this expensive “solution”. I can peel a lot of tape for $60+

Dusty, lacquer thinner takes off the residue. Won't harm either the template material or the work....unless it's plastic.

Thank you, Gene. I will give that a try. I don't even have to wait for the move. That can be done in the shop right now. Oops...I do need two sided tape that may be squirreled away.
