Carriage Stop Ring, & Blade "Zero"

There is no real good answer as the size of the stop ring ordered from Shopsmith is inconsistent (vintage changes).

I have two different dimensions taken from stop rings that I received from Shopsmith. They are 1.375" and 1.438". I don't remember for certain which is the most recent but I believe it is 1.438".

For the sake of record, when you have the quill fully retracted and both the carriage and the headstock firm against the carriage stop, how far off center is the blade and in which direction? For this question, please measure from the left side of the saw blade to the right side of the left side miter track.

Mine measures just a hair shy of 3 1/2". By my way of thinking, the table centerline is midway between the miter tracks. My miter track separation measures 7.016"; therefore, my blade is just a bit off center to the left.

I would appreciate any advice here. My stop ring appears to be incorrectly sized to place the blade in the center of the table insert opening. When I push the carriage up against the carriage stop ring, the blade position is to the right of the table insert opening, the stop ring appears to be too wide.

What am I missing?

If the blade is to the right of the insert opening the stop ring is to narrow. How wide is your ring? It should be approximately 1 1/2". I say approximately because we have had this discussion here before and there seems to be some slight variances in the width over the years.

It is interesting that yours is an early 90's 510. I bought a 510 new from Woodcraft in 1994. The ring on it was too narrow so the blade was to the right of the slot. I still have the ring. It is 1 1/4" wide. Years later I mentioned it to Shopsmith when I was ordering some parts and they sent me a new one.

Dusty, I can't make the measurement you are asking for at this time, I am using the Shopsmith as a glue up table for my current project and I don't want to take that down. But your information is helpful.

Really interesting. Apparently SS shipped machines with the wrong size stop ring in the early 90's. Give them a call. They should send you a new one.

Another comment after rereading this thread: Having the blade "centered" in the insert opening is not critical. The Shopsmith can be safely and accurately operated with the blade offset from center. Some use the machine with no carriage stop ring at all and have no issues.

When you say "the blade is to the right of the table insert opening" are you speaking of the opening in the table insert or the opening in the table?

A measurement from the miter slot to the blade would clear this up completely. Refer to the two sketches that I posted this morning. They show the dimensions of what I consider to be a perfectly positioned table and blade (measuring a nominal 3.5" from the blade to the miter slot).
