Bent 2 bearing mark v quill...options??

A bent shaft is hard for me to imagine BECAUSE I would have thought the plastic coupler would break before enough pressure could be applied to bend the shaft. But then I guess we don't know what condition the coupler is in either.

No you are definitely not the only one here to have bent a quill. I have bent three total I think, the last one about a month ago and all were due to very bad “ catches” while turning. Unfortunately my last one was a the brand new quill that came with my Power pro upgrade. If you do a lot of turning on a SS it is part of the risk. I rationalize the cost of a new quill from the standpoint that a lathe with a 1” or better shaft will cost me about $5000 or more and that’s a lot of new quills.

Ok, lemme re phrase....I HAVE had the quill out...I haven’t had the SHAFT out of the QUILL....but I know it is a 2 bearing quill because I can look in and see the rear bearing is where it should be...and yes it is a 14 spline shaft, one piece construction.....i swapped the disc to the rear output, and it works flawlessly....so the disc is fine...I just removed the shaft from the quill, and there are *gasp* two bearings that are both flawless, pressed on to a shaft that is *gasp* very wobbly lol...most of the runout is at the spline end....I feel like maybe i’m the first person to bend a shaft cause everyone seems so skeptical here that it is possible....

Just wondering how much “worse” the single bearing will be for my application....

Have patience, Steelcraft, we are trying to help you. You did not say that you had the quill out... Many new members have jumped to conclusions about the quill being bent. Some were right, some wrong. If you are really sure the quill is bent, just get another one. As far as parts go, really not that expensive. I for one would only buy a used one from a trusted seller. There are a few out there...

In fact, there are several very good lathes from Jet, Nova and Laguna with standard 1-1/4" x 8 spindles along with greater capacity, weight and bearings than a Shopsmith for about $1,800 to $2,500. (A bit less than the PP upgrades!)
